Battery suggestions

Pretty sure my battery is completely done. Can't start my runner without a jump. I think I'm going to run over to advance auto after class and get a new one. I have never bought a battery before, so any suggestions? Best bang for your buck?

I have a sub and amp on it as well as a remote car starter but that's it for now. May put some other stuff in later but no plans to for a while.

the only down side to gel cell batteries is they DO NOT like to be over charged, they are a 12v battery and like to be charged at 12v! most every vehicle ive seen that has a 12v system actually charges at 13+v. this will drastically shorten the life of a gel cell battery. if you want to get one i recommend getting a regulator and get a good marine type that is adjustable. they cost anywhere from $70+ and up. this will save your battery from premature death from over charging. just my word of advice.

I ended up just getting Everstart Maxx from Walmart for $80. On a college budget and it actually got top reviews on Consumer Reports. I'll get a nice one when I graduate and get a job! Thanks for the suggestions.

Hello, I noticed your conversation regarding our batteries and wanted to offer some assistance. bheltzel, if you ever do decide to upgrade to an Optima, a YellowTop would be more appropriate for your application, given the modifications to your electrical system. Anytime a battery is discharged to the point where it needs a jump, it is a good idea to fully-charge the battery with a battery charger as soon as possible. Most alternators are designed to maintain batteries, not recharge deeply-discharged batteries. Asking that task of an alternator can lead to a cycle of dead batteries and jump-starts, until either the battery or alternator fails.

While I occasionally see “gel” batteries referenced on message boards, I don't know anyone who actually uses one in a vehicle (all Optima batteries are AGM batteries). Fully-charged, our RedTops will measure about 12.6-12.8 volts and our YellowTops will measure about 13.0-13.2 volts. We consider an alternator voltage range of about 13.7-14.7 volts to be totally acceptable for our batteries and will not shorten their lifespan. If anyone has any questions about our batteries, I'll do my best to answer them.
