Hey there - forgive me if this is a stupid question...I'm just a girl not a gearhead....a Toyota dealership replaced both rear axles, seals, bearings, and related parts in 2011. My new mechanic says the bearings in the pumpkin and/or pinion bearings are bad. I'm getting clunking shifting in P-R-D and a grinding or low rumble noise at 45mph/70mph - it's getting worse. Is there any relationship to the pumpkin and the rear axle or is this just normal wear and tear on my 99 4Runner. She has 239k. Thanks!

Thanks for responding fourwd1. 4R is in the shop; definitely pinion bearings. I don't know what happened to cause the rear diff work in 2011. Toyota dealership said the axles were leaking badly and everything had to be replaced including drums and brakes. I'm sure I was screwed in more ways than none.
