Bedlining Roof. Durability?

Hey Guys,

My roof paint has gone to hell and I'm looking for a cheap fix. Thinking about rolling on Herculiner/Monstaliner. Can anyone comment how it'll hold up to heat? In the summer months it'll get a lot of direct sunlight and not sure if it'll "goo off" or bubble. I did a search, but didn't see anything on high heat durability. Thanks!

Its not much different from being in an actual truck bed that is in the sun.. as long as you properly prep and let it cure it should be fine.

Yeah, I've never heard or seen bed liner in the truck bed melt so no reason to think the roof would melt off either.

let us know how it turns out! im seeing a ton of rust in the groove that runs front to back above the doors on mine! (it lives ON the beach) my son bedlined the roof of his fullsize ford van and really saved it from rust.

Will do. I've seen guys on here bedline their entire rigs, so I'm guessing it's decent stuff.

Over a year out in the socal desert on the monstaliner.....no fading at all.

There's a few, 3 I believe, people on here have bedlined their full vehicles and I haven't heard any complaints from them. I think it looks good and provides a custom durable look.

Now that you bring it up.. i kind of want to do it too.. I have some surface rust near my moonroof as well as a few random dents from PO.. wouldn't look bad on a white runner.. thanks [MENTION=70513]Kanger328[/MENTION]

Nice! Good to know it's holding up well. Gonna pull the trigger on this...roof only though because I'm too chicken $h!t to do the whole rig.

Yeah, I thought about doing that or just using rattle can clear coat. But, I'm moving to an area that gets good hail and I wanna say rattle can wouldn't hold up as well. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Don't worry man it will end up bedlined. Once you notice that unless you're up close the paint looks virtually the same....it's over lol

I would find your stock color with no binders and mix that in over using monstaliner colors just because monstaliner was made for wheelers so there won't be a solid match to factory.

I've used Herculiner on the sides of my Tacoma and I would recommend against the brand. It has held up well as far as durability and abrasion resistance; however, it has faded a bit (not to grey, but it's not as dark as it was) and it has pitted. That's the best term I can think to use for it. Sort of like a porous weld where you can see pin holes in the surface.

I would highly recommend Raptor Liner. We used it on the hard top of my sister's Jeep and it looks great. Nice color and texture and it was easy to spray.

I would like to know how the truck sounds after the roof is done if you don't mind. Might be a good deadener for road and wind noise.

Stay away from Rustoleum and Hurculiner.

The Rustoleum on mine is chipping, and the Hurculiner on my brother's rockers is faded all to shit.

Go with MonstaLiner or RaptorLiner.

They all fade in time, just at different rates. I was spraying them ever since they started using the thinner variety that didn't require high tech equipment. They all get chalky eventually. Even Line-X does. There is no UV barrier, and black absorbs some serious heat from the sun. Personally I don't like the texture on the outside of a truck, but that's just my personal preference.

On a side note, a friend of mine bought a roll of satin black vinyl and wrapped his roof. I was laughing until I saw it was actually not that bad to look at, and he can peel it off and paint it when ever he wants. I may do the same thing for the sort term.

that was gonna be my next question, are some liners better than others? good stuff! looks like raptorliner is spray-on application and monstaliner suggests you roll their product on. who's used monsterliner? roll it on?

Monstaliner is 100% uv permenant. Out here in 29 palms pretty much everything else gets chalky in a year or less. Herculiner, line-x, and rhinoliner. My truck hasnt faded or chalked and its parked outside in the weather year round.

It takes rocks a lot better! No more pinstripes from brush or branches, no more waxing, hides dirt well, and it washes easily. You have to make sure you prep well everywhere. I have a few spots where it didn't stick well. It was hard to see how well I had covered the paint while I was spraying because it was the same color.

There is some sound deadening to it.....but not enough that I would do something like that just for quieting down the panels. I'm adding 80sqft of sound deadening here soon when I get around to stripping the interior lol.
