In another thread, I posted the ammo can I had been using for storage.
I liked it because it fit just right under the factory 'shelf' hooptie.

I realized that I needed another one. So I called all the Military Surplus places in Dallas/ Fort Worth, and finally found one place that had them in stock for $26.50/ea. (Omaha's in Fort Worth)
A buddy asked me to grab him one while I was there. So I walk out the door with 2... After I stick 'mine' under the shelf, I realize that I miiiiiiiight get a 3rd one in there... maybe....

Well.....

They fit... perfect!!!!!! :guitar3::guitar3::bounce::cheer2::rockon::rockon::rockon::rockon::rockon::rockon::rockon:

So I bought another one... The one on the shelf is representative of the condition I bought them in. A little cleaner and a coat of rattle can clear make them look spectacular.


If you can't find any local, there are online outlets who sell them.
If searching google, look for a 81mm mortar ammo can.

Anyhow, i'm beyond stoked about these things fitting this well. Really cleans up the clutter.
I hope this is helpful for my 4R brethren. This forum is such a valuable resource as so much has been learned and shared... I only hope I can bring new info and help in exchange for all the help i've received.

Yes, 99% of the time I have car seats for my kiddos (3 & 4 y/o) and they fit better with the headrests on backwards. Good eye sir... good eye.

I'm sure there are lots of ways to skin this cat... but I'm using the hook side of velcro with adhesive on the back to keep them from sliding on the carpet. It doesn't stop them completely if you're truck is going up a 45* incline... but for everyday driving it provides enough resistance.

Columbia, Missouri! We have one army surplus store in town. Walked in and the guy had 2 stacks of them. Probably about 18 - 20 total? I asked how much he wanted and said, "ooooooh for those? I'd take $6." - DEAL!

He mentioned that they weren't waterproof so not many people would want them. Then he complimented me on my 4Runner and I walked away a happy customer. :banana:

Some of the older ones did have a rubber gasket in the lid to help with water resistance. I have one for over 20 yrs that still has one in it.

Mine don't rattle at all. The handles have some resistance to them. So much so that if you lift them up... they stay up. My wife likes that feature. :naughty:

The can on the shelf is the same as the 3 cans under the shelf.

These are not designed to seal. They have 4 holes drilled into the front, one on each corner. Probably the same holes drilled into the back.

You might be able to seal them some but I think it would be tough to get them as sealed as a .30 or .50cal ammo can.

I love the size of these, I need to find one.

My plan is to get one and attach it to the floor, right up against a wheelwell longways (like you show them). That way I can still put my dog's crate on the other side when needed but have a secure place to keep recovery gear, tools, etc.

Found some on ebay but shipping is more than the crate. Going to have to make some calls locally and see what's around.

The smaller ones have the seal in them. These look more durable for caring my camping gear in them versus my plastic ones, cracking already. Holes are fillable. Again thanks for the info.

I have 3 of these that I picked up after a mortar shoot when I was in the Marine reserve back in the mid-90's. The mortar guys had 'em all in a pile and we're going to haul them to the dump, but grunts don't let anything go to waste .

I have one in the garage that is filled with sunflower seeds for my wife's bird feeders. The chipmunks had a field day with the 4 holes drilled on the front and back until I simply covered the holes with some heavy-duty duct tape.

For something more permanent - and someone with more skill - I guess you could weld the holes shut (?). Not sure.

I think the ones with the seal are for the 60mm mortar rounds. These are for 81mm, three rounds to a can, if memory serves. They also came with foam inserts for the three projectiles which were glued to the interior, but are easily removed.
