Bent axle

I had my axle bent . a guy whacked my driver side rear wheel well... got insurance to pay for the damage on body ... I told the ins guy it now has a vibration after the hit .. he ignored my ***** ..

replaced tire/rim with spare still vibs.. then one year later the gear oil got on the brake shoes . leaking at the bearing..

brought to my family members shop .. told him all this .. he pulled out that side of the axle and sure it was bent. then he had a axle in the repair shop lucky me.. new bearings seals and a good used axle .. ran another 150K miles no leaks ..

All that matters is that you figure which part(s) that need to be replaced. The hard part is finding a shop you trust to either do the work for you or tell you which parts to replace yourself. It all depends on the time/money ratio in your life. At least the positive is that this gives you justification for upgrades.
 
I have an extra right rear axle. We thought it was bent but it turned out to be the rear wheel bearing. Long story that I don't have time to tell right now. If you are interested in the axle, send me a PM.
 
I don't see any other bends. Any ideas on checking the axle for a bend for sure that anyone can think of? I can't see an easy way to throw a t square in there.

I don't think it's the axle shaft, if it's not what other people here are thinking I'm thinking it'll be the tube. The wheel spins true when I jack it up and spin it. Also there is no wobbling or sounds coming from there; just poor stability and uneven tire wear.

It could also be the control arm bushings, there have been post of people having goofy alignment and unstable rear ends. A shop should be able to tell exactly what is going on, otherwise time to start checking the easy things first. Does anything move or feel loose when you try to shake the axle with the wheels off the ground? Any play in the control arms? All bolts torqued to spec?
 
I have found the tubes to be very weak and easily bent. Just like [MENTION=138935]catrains[/MENTION] my #1 T4R tube was bent when my son was hit in the rear tire. Later when it was t-boned it got bent again.

No test that I know of other than the one you already did by measuring tires front to back. It's still possible that it's a spindle or bearing but, like you've already mentioned, those tend to have other symptoms (i.e. noise, vibration, or wobble).
 
Monkey Wrench: everything is solid under there; bushings, bars, bolts, etc.

V8 man, the axle tube is what you're talking about?

Update: had an alignment guy look at it that seems trustworthy. He said he's certain the axle housing (tube) is bent but the axle shaft should be just fine. Anyone else swap out the housing with stock internals?
 
For those who replaced axle tubes did you get a used or new one? Can't find any used ones locally and I'm struggling to find any new ones for a decent price.

You're also running 39s lol lets be fair here. IMO for 39s I'd have 60s under my rig. Under a stock truck, even a truck on 33s or 35s, they hold up very well against a lot of abuse. They're designed like a small 9"

They aren't hard to bend, even with a smaller tire size. Slide on the snow and hit a square curb with the rear end wrong and you run the risk of bending the housing.
 
So I checked the thread but are you having any symptoms? I wacked a curb going completely sideways at about 20mph. I thought I would have knocked my tire clear off. The tire looks cocked in a little but the dealer said they saw no damage, but didn’t align it. I bet if they put it on a rack it would be way out. However I get no noise, wheel vibration, pulling to either side or anything, tires last me 70k with no strange wear. Plus I tow all the time and tow heavy. It was about 100k Miles ago that I did it. So make sure it’s really an issue before you spend lots of money.
