Best GPS App

Does anyone know of a good GPS app to use on a Nexus 7?

I just set mine up in the Runner and Google maps is OK but it would be nice to have one with more options like a screen darkening at night and bigger cursor. I do like the size and map detail better with the Nexus vs my Garmin.

If Waze is available on the android platform I highly recommend it for around town driving. It uses real time cloud based data to give drive time and traffic estimates. Works great for me on my commute a few days a week. Haven't found a good iOS app for the backcountry... yet...
 
Waze! Most definitely! I'm a Field Service Technician, I drive roughly 200 miles everyday. I was an early adopter of Waze, I've been using it for about 4 years. I was skeptical at first, but I've grown to really love it. I got rid of my Garmin, Tomtom, and Magellan. The real time reporting is great, you can see reported accidents, speed traps, all sorts of stuff. And it's tough to beat the price, free.
Since Google acquired it, they've put in some ads, but they are pretty unobtrusive.
 
Google acquired waze the company? Or it's avail on andriod? Props to you field guys. Every road correction I've ever submitted has been fixed well and fast. Amazing group of people.
 
Yeah, from what I understand, Google acquired it about 3 or 4 months ago. I was afraid that they would ruin it, but other than the ads that pop up when I'm stopped, they seem to be doing well with it.

And yeah, I think the Android version came out early last year. One of my coworkers uses it. He seems to like it too.

Funny you should say that, I just downloaded a trial version of BackCountry Navigation that looks pretty good. It uses topo maps that should work great for our backwoods driving on old county roads. No wireless conection needed.

Thanks for the Waze hint, looks to be better for city and where you have signal. Unfortunatly, my Nexus is bluetooth only. I am going to download it and give it a try.

Try Navfree. Once you download the map for the state that you are using it in, you won't need a wifi or data connection to use it. Best of all, its free. I used it in Florida when I did not have internet access. I sold both my TomTom's. Only need to use it when I drive my wife's suv as my 2014 T4R has Navi in it. Oh and its available for both IOS and Android.
 
Just tried the Navfree out and it works great. The maps are a little out of date with a few of the newer roads not on it, but overall I like the way you can zoom and it has a day/night mode. Definitely a great GPS app. This one will go on my phone too.

I think I'll buy the back country app for access to the free topos. They are nice when your back in the woods. Also, they will give you an idea if a road is passible or not.

BCN is the bomb. Check out the Accuterra maps add-on, they're great.
 
Going to download the BCN app today and give it a go. My wife hinted at an Ipad with data soon and those have the pretty decent gps chip in them. I desperately want that on my dash. Now if only they made an OBDII tool that displayed gauges on a mobile or tablet....:tape2:

Torque. It's only for Android though, maybe you should hint to your wife that an Ipad isn't on top of your list. :moon:
 
hm, I have a nexus 7 aswell, and downloaded GPS essentials, but couldn't get any data. as if it didn't have a gps chip installed.

what am I doing wrong?

edit: bwhahaha. I was downloading navfree as I typed the above. apparently my GPS was turned off. :lol:

For iOS: DashCommand. Only issue is you need a certain type of OBDII device to pair with it. I use a Go-Point personally. App is $10 on the apple store.
 
I tried navfree, but my location wasn't listed. if it was, I didn't see it. oh well, deleted it, and using GPS essentials.
 
No one likes the google maps nav that comes with android phones? I use it all the time and have never had a problem. Even the real time traffic works and is pretty accurate.
 
You have to download " Navfree USA" then go to upgrades and add each state you want. The app "Navfree" is for all other countries but the USA.

I may go back and try it again late, but for now im good with GPS essentials.
 
LeadNav vs Gaia

Has anyone had any experience with LeadNav or Gaia gps apps on iPhone or iPad? These seem to be the top choices for many folks and since they both cost some money to get started, I'd like to use one or the other. I use MotionX currently but I'd like to get a little more out of my mapping app. Pro-s and Con's to either?

I currently use Gaia and it works very well. I still have a lot to learn but for tracking routes and sharing it does what I want. I have no experience with LeadNav.
