best headers towing a boat

Hi I have a 02 4runner im going to be towing a 3,000lbs boat. I was wondering what would be the best headers also what would be the best system to finish off the exhaust and whats a good programer to make sure its getting enough fuel for the added air flow? Im looking for more power and torque i already have a full intake and im getting 456 gears.

really no programers and for headers unless ur s/c the time and effort to install them the gains are very little

yeah i am adding a supercharger later for now just finishing up the exhaust. Im already getting a lean code from the intake any ideas how to add more fuel? i got a adjustible fuel regulator from edelbrock just havent put it on should that do the trick?

The only worthwhile upgrades for towing a boat is doing the Tundra brake upgrade along with adding an external tranny cooler.

I never have heard the pros and cons towing with a supercharger.

yup got the tranny cooler with fan works great. by the time i super charge it we will have a 5.7 tundra or f250 super charger is going to be for the dunes. whats the tundra brake mod?

What intake do you have that you are getting a lean code? The airflow meter should have more than enough room in its programming range to accommodate for the increased airflow of an intake. unless the sample tube portion of the intake is drastically different in size than the stock air box.

What size is the tube itself? Factory should have been about 2.5" ID, and that is what that sensor and ECU are calibrated to use. Increasing it by even 1/4" will cause havoc with the ECU's tuning. This is a good trick to use when you want/need to run larger injectors and have more head room for the MAF under boosted conditions. You could potentially use a fuel pressure regulator to increase pressure and "fix" the fuel issue, but you will want to monitor spark timing. As the ECU sees less air from the larger tube, you will move the timing map into what is most likely a more aggressive amount of spark advance.

If the tube is the same 2.5" ID then I would check the vac line that feeds the fuel pressure reg. should be around a 4mm vac line, (you have some hose clamps on it) make sure you are getting a good signal from the intake to the regulator. although generally this should cause it run rich under WOT rather than lean.

wheres the vacuum lines that hooks up to that tube on the intake manifold ?
those lines were never there that i know of?

And yeah the intake tube is bigger the inside diameter is 2 3/4. Sometimes under WOT when the check engine light is on it will pop/Backfire and pick up again would that be that its running lean at WOT or rich? Im getting headers and trd dual cat back would uni unit be good ?

Yeah you are running lean ... I don't want to jinx you, but if you keep it up you are going to damage the engine. I would throw the stock intake back on at least for now. Find some smaller tubing for at least the MAF section of your intake.

Take a look at a lot of the bigger "name brands" injen, fujita, AEM, etc this is why they will have that bottle neck at the MAF sensor.

o man i been running it awhile like this and i have done a few road trips and like 5 hard trips to the local dunes but it has only has back fired on my like 3 times. i always wonder y my tundra k and n intake had that bootle neck now i know. do u think i will be ok if i leave it and add the fuel regulator?

Man you are already throwing codes and you haven't even added the SC yet. I would get the ECU working correctly before modifying your engine any further.

With regards to towing, I agree with little ceaser, the best upgrade is to fix your brakes.

I have downey headers but I only added them because the engine was getting rebuilt anyways so the extra labor was nil.

yeah for sure that will be all fixed before the supercharger these are my plans for now in order

1. add edelbrock fuel pressure regulator
2. uni chip
3. 456 gears
4. headers but NOT sure which ones are the best
5. TRD dual cat back exhaust
6. 7th injector kit
7. o2 sensor gauge
8. then supercharger

Avoid the chip since those are bogus and just lighten your wallet instead of doing anything for the engine. Dual exhaust is really only a visual mod unless you plan on making it true dual exhaust but otherwise it's costing you more and adding more weight to your truck which just takes more ponies to move your truck.

I tow a boat that has a combined trailer and boat weight of 3500 lbs. I have a 99 limited, absolutely stock, (except tranny cooler, a must) and I have no problems whatsoever towing and stopping the boat. You learn to drive appropriate to your load and capabilities. My trailer has surge brakes and I'm sure that helps tremendously with the braking performance.

The JBA headers are nice but they are short tube, the Thorley headers are long tube and will do more for torque than the short tubes. The real way to fix fuel issue is fuel pump, fuel injectors and URD fuel management system. If you are local to So Cal you can go to JET performance and they can custom dyno program your ECU for your mods. None of this is cheap so I hope you have deep pockets.

Biggest advice, tranny cooler(you have already), Tundra Brake upgrade, Re-gear and drive responsibly knowing that these will never be a power house. That is why a few of these guy keep second vehicles for their speed thrills.
