Best Low Budget Console Safe for the 5th Gen

Since we live in Texas now I carry all of the time. I have had a concealed carry for many years in other states.

I was looking into a console safe instead of using separate lock box when I go to places that you cannot carry.

What is the best and most economical console safe for the 4Runner?
I have investigated the Toyota one but at $330 its too expensive at the places I can find that have them for sale.
There are some on Amazon but they look like they are made in China and that I would like to avoid.

Any input would be appreciated.

Super happy with my Console Vault. They are still running a 20% OFF sale and free S/H. Very well made here in the US and easy install. I got the "upgraded" Elite lock too.

Lock Er Down is a great safe!I have the 4 digit combo version. Check secondary markets FB market, offer up etc... i paid $100 shipped for it, I do think there is a toyota one list in classifieds here.

I did more research and Ive found the OEM Toyota console safe for around $270 locally.

Do any of the aftermarket console safes have features that make them better the the OEM model?

for a basic safe the OEM toyota one will likely be fine if you can get it at a good price. having to use the key to open it would be a real pain but I believe it has a tumbler as well.

some of the higher end ones have electronic key pads but really for me the 4 key tumbler from locker down is plenty and very stout. and pretty heavy. it aint going anywhere.

I have the OEM toyota safe. There’s no key, it’s a 3 digit combination lock.

The OEM safe is made in the US by a company in Tennessee. It’s well built and has some features that make it resistant to prying attacks.

Toyota-branded is part number PT972-89200.

Personally, now that I use readers, I hesitate to purchase a console lockbox with any kind of combination lock.

Console Vault sells a variant with a barrel-key lock; currently $319. Free shipping throughout the lower 48 states.
Boss Strongbox has a made in USA model for $299.
4Runner Lifestyle has one with a combination lock for $199. They also sell the Boss Strongbox (same price as manufacturer) and they usually have a decent Black Friday sale (and maybe others, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, etc.).

There are many. I have not rushed to purchase, but may do so this year. Some of them appear to allow a USB cable out through a hole, not that I am using the USB jack inside my truck all the time, but maybe I don't want to seal it off totally.

I think I need to pick up something, I usually just leave mine in the console and have never had an issue. But, I have a friend that is a police officer and he says a that when they break into a vehicle, that is the first place they look. I could lock it in the glove box but then they would just break that open.

I know someone who lost a pistol due to theft from a regular old center console, no vault or lockbox.

The stakes could be higher in some states or jurisdictions. There are accounts out there of CCW permit holders being revoked after a weapon, improperly secured, was stolen from a vehicle.

In Texas I am fine as long as the vehicle is locked. If unlocked and a child gets hurt, I could be in big trouble (which applies anywhere under federal law).
