I’ve got a range of up to $100 and really want to master some skills with electrical troubleshooting.

What multimeter is the best for a beginner?

I want to make sure my electronics on my 04 Sport are solid and I feel the inexpensive meters I have are holding me back.

What’s your favorite? If you like a more expensive one that $100 which one is it and why?

Back in my tech years, I saw all kinds of brands in use. You might get a cheaper version to start on, and later look at entry models of Fluke and the like.

It depends on how far into electronics you want to go. For me, for the most part, I've been able to do all the research I've needed using a simple multimeter. Mostly it's just voltage and continuity measurements when diagnosing problems. The clamp meter style is handy. I bought one of those a couple years ago and it has a lot of features. For me, 90% of the time, it's continuity and voltage and even at that it doesn't have to be any better than a tenth of a volt on voltage.

Get something in the $50 range and learn how to use it and what you need it for. After you've done that you can decide if you need anything better. Make sure you get some good probes too.

Klein makes many versions below 100..available at home depot. I keep one in my truck at all times. Have a fluke in my computer bag at all times, and a fluke in my garage. You could say I am meter poor. Fwiw I am a electrical contractor.

I use a Fluke 179, bought it off used ebay for 220ish, seems like a good deal at the time. use it at home and in the car, pretty sure there is another model that is better.

Best bang for the buck, and I have everything from Fluke, fieldpiece, HP and and Triplett to Simpson meters. I recommend this one to anyone who just needs a meter that can do everything well.

Measures DC mA for finding small drains in 12 DC auto circuits, non contact voltage probe, temp probe. resistance and voltage. These hold up well and are a perfect all around meter.

Klein Tools MM400 Auto Range Digital Multimeter will be the best choice for beginners.

The back lite on the 400 and 420 are nice. This may replace my old Fluke I keep in the truck. An old 77, with worn out dial. thanks

I picked up a Craftsman Mutlimeter for like $40 or something almost 20 years ago.

It works well for the average DIYer around the house, under the hood and on the home electronics bench.

I wouldn't use it for calibrating electrical transmitter instruments.

Fluke makes great quality hand-held meters for professional use in all price ranges.
For use on your 4Runner look at the Fluke 107. It’s about $100 on Amazon.

I have a Fluke 78 from the old days, which has tach and dwell functions. If I were shopping today I’d be looking at the Innova 3340. It will take you a long time to grow out of it.
