what year has the best options and most of the bugs worked out?
best year of the 4th gens?

IMO the '06 and newer as far as options. As far as bugs go im sure someone else will chime in. The '06 and up come with LED tails, and projector headlights for starters, and if you go with an '08, the SR5 comes with many things that were options on the 06 like side curtain airbags,traction control on/off switch, theres some other things im forgetting right now.

Really? Where to?? ...... i have an 05. I think it would be better for it to be on the center console.......... I personally like the projector fog/turn signals on the bumper more than then 06+ models. Looks "more truckish", of course this is subjective, but ALL 4Runners are awesome!!
So I guess the better question would be: What are the problem areas of the 4Runner??
So far (not too serious issues):
1) adjustable shocks
2) Sunroof (breakage, seems that that grease drys over time and "crusts" up)
3) clicking seats
4) ?????

IMHO 2005 is a best year: V6 models gets 5 spd trany and V8 models got VVTi. but body trim was not changed: front bumper remained smaller than 2006 and up models as well as wheel well trim remained not as wide, which makes 2006 and up models look like they are too wide for their wheel stance, kind of like jeep Grand Cherokee from the rear. :biggrin2:And I also like fog lights on the bumper.:cheers:

It's in the center counsole in a row of three items more to the drivers side. The first two being 12V plug ins, and the one farthest from the dash the driver the rear window switch.
I agree with this...it's my biggest problem with the '06 - '09 4Runners. Without wheel spacers (or wheels with a better offset), they look horrible from behind with the wheels/tires set in so far from the fenders.
Unfortunately, Toyota carried that over to the 5th gen as well. It almost looks like it's on stilts when you're following behind it.
I believe 2008 was also the first year that side curtain air bags became standard.

You can find them in earlier ones (as an option). Jed is right, '08 they became standard.
Link in my sig. It's not as perfect as the '08 but it gets the job done.

cool so the '08 is the year then? even though i know what you guys are saying about the stance being wrong,I'm helping my mother buy a new 4runner and am not sure if she cares about such things, i on the other hand do, so we'll see what comes of that,you guys have been of great help! and have given me a few good things to think about appreciate it!
Yeah, I think '08 is your best bet. All of the safety stuff standard....a VSC off switch...probably most (if not all) of the little bugs worked out, but then again these vehicles are really very reliable across the entire generation. The only thing I really don't like is the stance of the vehicle, but that can be fixed quite easily.
If it's for your mother. Then I would go with the '09. It's the last one, so if logic serves me right, it should have more of the bugs worked out then any other year. I doubt she will care where the rear window switch is, and I don't think she'll care that the wheels are about 2.5 inches too close together lol. I'd go with the '09. But '08 would be fine to, because it also has the standard safety features.

'05 and '06 were the big upgrade years. '05 got the big mechanical upgrades and '06 got a body redesign and a lot of electrical/operational upgrades.
I believe '05 was the last year for a cassette player (not sure which models, I have JBL system) which, no doubt, the vast majority would wish to avoid. If, by chance, your mom would find value in having a cassette player, I thought I'd mention it.
