Bigger oil filter.

There are people that have found other, larger, filters for the 3rd gens. The big question is, are the specs the same (mainly bypass pressure)? If not, you may have oil bypassing and not being filtered or not bypassing when the filter gets clogged, starving the engine.
If the specs match, bigger is better. Nice find.

According to Mobil-1 source M1-301 filter isn't designed for 4th gen 4 Runner or any gen 4 Runner. M1-102 and MO241 only filters Mobil-1 recomends for your ride. In source cross referance there is even warning: "For general reference only. Check catalog for correct application. Any use of this interchange to determine applications is done at the installers risk." You are on your own on that one, brother.

I dont think the m1 301 is the right one, i been using the m1 209 without and problems.

I've been doing a semi-scientific comparison of various filters using Blackstone Labs to test the oil after using different filters. The last sample I send in was from the Mobile 1 M1 301. They said there were considerably more insoluble particles in the oil (it was dirtier) than with the TRD filter. Perhaps a faulty blow-by valve was allowing unfiltered oil to circulate, or maybe they are just crappy filters. I don't know. I haven't posted up results on the thread I started on the filter comparisons because I only have results from two filters so far. I should be getting the results from the standard Toyota filter next, and then I'll post up the findings and continue to add to them as folks request I test other filters. Next up is going to be the TruFilter Stainless steel filter. They make some pretty big claims about the superiority of their filters... we'll see. Ultimately, I'll probably install a dual filter system from Amsoil that filters down to the sub-micron level. Now that is good filtration. I also saw a standard Amsoil filter that had an absolute rating of 15 microns. That is the best I've seen off the shelf at an auto parts store. Regardless, I ALWAYS change every three thousand.

Sorry I just find it hard to take advice from anyone that has a throttle body spacer installed...

The theory is that more filter material means more junk getting filtered out and the filter will last longer. Also I have heard the theory that the oil temp will drop will slightly since it has more room to cool. Most people that practive this use an up-sized filter (slightly larger). :cheers:
I still like the story of the guy that had his oil analyzed with and with out a filter and it was pretty much the same.

I find this hard to believe being that whatever certain section of oil is in the filter for all of about 1 second (if that) before it's sent through the motor again.
You could also make the argument that more filter material will let more junk get by. A filters efficiency increase as it fills until totally blocked. More material lets more particles get by longer until they clog the media increasing the efficiency. This is obviously the extreme, but the point being it is stupid. You are not doing anything noticeably good by putting a bigger filter. Some people overthink things.
Unless you put some fins on your filter and air flowing around it you are not getting lower temps either.
