Binding in Diff?

Today as I was turning from a deadstop onto oncoming traffic (turning right)...I noticed a pretty heavy thunder...seemed from the tranny/differential.

I assume this is the Diff Binding?

Vehicle has been in Hi-4 all winter long and then come spring/summer we switch to Hi-2.

Is this an issue?

Probably just a touch of the infamous driveline thump. Has it been a while since the driveshaft was lubed? It's probably nothing...:peace:
 
Are you sure it wasn't the traction control system kicking in because of wheel spin during the turn? The first time it happened to me, I thought something in the drive train had broken.

The Torsen is not 100% bind proof. Low speed, tight turn with acceleration can do that. Nothing to worry about.
 
Good to hear and it alleves any anxiety then! :)

Might be a good practice to switch it back and forth between 2hi-4hi and 4lo once a month. I do that and all seems to stay quiet and smooth. When I let them go for 6+ months they seem a bit jerky on engagement. Maybe I am crazy and imagining it but I think cycling the system is a good idea.

Good tip. We usually just leave it in 4Hi all winter long and then back to 2hi come spring so yeah I'll start switching back and forth once in a while :)
 
Why do you leave it in 4Hi all winter? I've never been to Edmonton so I don't know what the road conditions are like. If you're on snow and ice ALL the time, then sure, 4Hi could be warrented, but otherwise you should not be in 4wd unless you actually need it. Your description of the noise sounds like driveline wind-up to me, which can be similar to diff binding, but if it was diff binding it would do it in 2wd as well.

What's Driveline Windup?

It's fairly snowy, icy, slushy, and COLD throughout the winter.

The rigs back on 2HI as spring is doing it's thaw job and the roads are nice and dry (though riddled with pebbles which lets me punch the rig and spits up a nice amount of rocks ;0)
 
What's Driveline Windup?

"Driveline windup", "axle windup" along with "diff binding" and some others are all part of a group of terms used to describe the mechanical pressures created when driving a vehicle that is locked between front and back. When a metal shaft turns against resistance it twists a little bit; it can sort of wind up. When that twisting force is in opposite directions on the front and rear drive shafts (a tight turn), it creates a "bind" on the connection between them.

Bind probably wasn't the best choice of term to describe the Torsen, but there is variable design friction inside that is not found in a conventional differential. The symptom you mentioned under your set of conditions is a known issue that is usually mild enough to go unnoticed and is only considered a possible negative from a customer satisfaction viewpoint. It's not a reliability issue of any kind. The Torsen C has proven itself extremely reliable.

Okay good to know!

I've switched to 2HI and will leave it there now as our roads are nice and bare and hopefully stay like this for until October! (my fuel economy will love it as well)

But you should switch to 4H and drive around for 10 miles every month to keep the front drivetrain lubricated. It would also be a good time then to switch to 4L and lock the center diff as well to keep those parts in good working order.

I've started switching to 4LO once in a while just to make sure the actuator(?) gets worked.
