Black 2000 SR5 Manual Build Thread

Hi everyone, here is my 2000 SR5 4WD manual 4runner, no e-locker. I got it with 260,000 KM on it two years ago. It had one previous owner. It is now at about 290,000km and running like a champ. When I first got it I wasn’t even interested in offroading, I just wanted a good SUV for the winter. Over time I fell in love with it and now I am making it into something of my own to go adventuring with. It had some rust issues and some lack of maintenance from the previous owner that I am slowly taking care of. Living in northern Canada has not made this easy! Two years later and now I am really happy with the progress I have made so far. I am not an expert or a mechanic and I have had a lot of help but I have been learning a lot in my short time with my Runner!

Here it is when I first got it:

What I Have Done So Far

Engine:
-cleaned throttle body
-replaced MAF sensor (P0171 is now gone!)
-replaced 02 sensor
-NKG plugs and wires
-new fuel filter

Suspension/ Steering:
-Old Man Emu 2.5 inch lift kit
-replaced leaking steering rack
-Replaced lower ball joints

Wheels/ Tires:
17” rims 31” aggressive AT tires

Body:
-Replaced rusted-out reach hatch that wouldn’t close properly
-replaced rusty front fenders with new ones I painted
-removed and repainted surface rust around windshield and other areas
-trimmed off the ends of the rusty rocker panels (will later patch with new metal)
-removed silver fender trim. There was a lot of rust hiding behind it
-running boards removed

Frame:
-Sanded and painted frame with POR15 rust paint. It’s holding up well.

Other:
-Shrockworks front bumper
-Baja Designs spot/driving combo lights in bumper
-swapped old turn signal switch for new one with fog light option. I connected the pre-wired fog wiring to my new lights.
-Fixed parking brake (rusted)

How it is now:

Coming up in the future:
-Roof rack (can anyone recommend me something good to get in Canada?)
-winch for bumper
-ARB rear locker
-raised rear diff breather
-rock sliders

Wishlist: replace rusty rear quarter panels and wheel wells with new metal, replace crappy rocker panels. A company in Quebec makes these special parts so shipping in Canada wouldn’t be too bad. I would also like to go up an inch or two in tire size once my current tires need replacing.

I'll be posting some of the things I have done to my Runner in the two years I have had it

Here's a look at my front fenders that I changed out. I painted them with aerosol automotive paint from NAPA and they came out pretty good.

The silver strips on the old fenders concealed a lot of rust, and there were big rust holes in the front of the fenders.

Here's some of the rust I am dealing with. I'm sorry if you live in the southern US and these pics make you cry.

I removed the side steps. They concealed a lot of rust!

I will eventually replace the rust rockers with new ones in a year or two. I trimmed back the rust and the new front fenders certainly help with its appearance too. I have cut out all of the rusted spots, sanded, repainted and sealed up the good metal that is still left.
