Black Soot on Intake Manifold Near Throttle Body - 2000, 3.4L

I looked under the hood today and there's a considerable amount of black soot on the manifold, near the throttle body.

Can someone tell me what this is about and the easiest fix?

Here's a picture. After taking this picture, I ran seafoam through the truck, and replaced the PCV valve because it looked gross when I pulled it to run the seafoam into the manifold.

Please let me know your input!

Did you replace the PCV hose as well? Maybe the hose is cracked or is spitting the carbon onto the throttle body.

I did not replace that hose, :/ ...I replaced a hose above it because it was obviously cracked...I will as that makes sense based on where the soot is.

That being said, what do you guys think of the cheapo $2.99 PCV at Orilieys? It was all plastic and lightweight compared to the original toyota PCV I removed. Should I get one from Toyota and swap it out?

Did a quick search of O’Reilly’s selection of PCV hoses and found generic Dorman hoses, but none that had the fit for a 2000 3.4L. Not sure if that’s what you found. While it’s not a coolant or oil line and therefore would not be catastrophic if an inexpensive hose failed, IMO it’s probably better to get a hose rated and pre-shaped for your application. Rated as in oil and fuel compatible, as well as for heat. I prefer good old fashioned rubber, but some like silicone for whatever reason. I’m sure the cheap hose will work for the time being, but just put it on your list for down the road, perhaps at the next oil change, to pick up a good quality rubber hose.

2 observations from the photo.


1. There is an AM hose clamp on that ventilation hose. Possibly a leak there.


2. There's a "cover" that goes over that area. It's an odd foam like cover that I've wondered what the point of it is. There must be one. Check out the link I've provided. It show a breakdown of the PCV system, including that cover.(12235)

I would personally use the Toyota one, part number 12204-62010

Further, for the PCV hose, mine was leaking and left all sorts of nasty deposits and caused me to have bad gas mileage due to a vacuum leak. Toyota Part number: 12261-62041

This is kind an odd thing to see though, as the 4Runner doesn't use EGR so it's probably not really "soot" but grime collecting in the area. I'd suspect bad hose. Theres not any pressure in that area for it to be blowing out like that, but check your throttle body gasket to see if it also has this build up and make sure the throttle body is actually sitting on the manifold properly.

I'm pretty sure the point of that foam piece is to lower NVH and is totally unnecessary.

I don't have that in my runner but I do have those two form like covers on both ends of PCV hose on the Land Cruiser. Don't know the purpose but it is pretty oily!

I just installed the same PCV valve+ the doorman grommet it feels cheap as shit but I need to get my rig back in service so we will see how she holds up

If it's reducing vibration couldn't that cause a leak? I really think it's there for a reason and is not "totally unnecessary" JMHO

Didn't look at it for a while...soot got worse. Gonna follow suggestions above. 198,000 now...

On another note. I found a 97 4x4 T4R with 97k for $4,400.00. Interior is kinda nasty. A/C is out. Rear hatch will not open and drivers door will not open from inside...

It makes me wonder what else is wrong..like how'd it get so beat up.

Also, the fact that it's been up on offer up and craigslist for over a week and nobody's snagged it yet...makes me think there's more issues. I haven't had the time to look myself yet.

What do y'all think?

That's a ton of money for a 97 with a bunch of problems. Hard pass. I just bought a 96 that had soot in the same areas, its the PCV hose.
