Bought my first 4Runner today!

Hi!

I just bought my first 4 runner today. After having nothing but a Miata for 4 years, I wanted something bigger and more comfortable, especially in Houston, where my stiff and lowered Miata was not cutting it on the horrible roads. I've always loved 4Runners, so I thought it'd be a good idea to buy one as a daily driver.

It's a 1991 4x4 V6. Mine has 154k miles and seems to be extremely clean. Everything in it works (knock on wood), including the retractable antenna! I've never seen a car this old with one of those still working. I'm not quite sure if the 4wd works, but it's not a huge issue. The only things wrong with it are some missing interior trim pieces (like a headrest, etc) and some weird wiring that the PO installed for a stereo, as well as an aftermarket alarm. Hopefully I can fix those quickly.

Also, just wondering, where would be a good resource for spare parts? I was thinking of trying the junkyard, but just in case any electronics or anything like that goes out, where could I find some new (or used) ones?

Its' nice to see a 2nd gen in such good shape! AND its a 5spd! Here in Canada, most have rust, rust, rust. I saw one the other day, with a rust hole the size of a dinner plate in the rear lower quarter panel! Still running great! You should be able to find trim parts at Pick and Pull, no problem. If the climate is as easy on vehicles as yours seems to have fared, you shouldn't have a problem.

If the local junkyards don't have what you need for small odds and ends, eBay can do the trick sometimes.
 
Welcome to the club sharp looking runner! X 2 on local junk yard if not can find anything on here or the web. If you want to make sure the 4wd drive is working just pull back in 4high and at low speed just cut wheel hard to one side or other in a flat parking lot if its jumping and barking your good to go! If you don't know service records might as well change front and rear diff fluid out.
 
Thanks everyone! I will try and do the diff fluid at some point. I was going to jack up the entire thing and see if all 4 wheels spun, but driving it around in a parking lot seems easier.

Is there a go-to manual for these trucks? When I had my Volvo 240, everyone recommended the Bentley Publishers manual, which was very handy when I was trying to figure out some electrical gremlins. If I could get a resource like that for my 4Runner I'll be all set.
 
If you search your generation on here I'm sure someone has posted the whole manual in a pdf format for you to download or just bookmark.

Thanks! I just did that and got the manual. I'm going to replace all the oil in the truck in the next two weeks or so. I guess I'll start a thread in the appropriate section for advice on the best oil to use, though.
 
I'm a Mobile 1 full synthetic 5w30 fan. Can go 5k miles between changes but always use Toyota oil filter in my opinion. Can't beat using filter that motor was tested with while it was developed.


That's in my 08 of course the 11 uses 0 w 30 and dealer says change every 10k bs I still change at 5k.

Hmm, looks like I'm going to be buying a lot of Mobil 1 tomorrow. Hopefully full synthetic will be fine for my '91.
