So my coworker did this this morning to his '99 Limited.

but he did this to the other guy.

He had 300k on the original engine and tranny

Haha I know. Obviously the guy did not learn his lesson the first time. It scares me to see 'battle damage' on vehicles that almost hit me. At least once a month I avoid a near wreck and a good percentage of those times, the offender already has damage in the exact place I would have hit. Some people never learn apparently.

He thinks the frame looks OK, but can't be sure without more inspection.

And I feel kinda bad because my 2nd thought (right after 'geez that sucks!') was 'Oh goody it's Christmas time'! His '99 is really clean and mine needs a few cosmetic pieces. We'll see what insurance says, but he may be buying it back. Hell, I may 'buy it back'. It'll part out easily.

Oh, and my parked 4Runner once caused over $1,000 of rear end damage to a doofus neighbor in a Camry who backed into it...while it was sitting in a car port. I'm not even kidding, there was the slightest dent in the rear original steel bumper...and his trunk was destroyed. The real bummer for him was when he realized an insurance claim might be tricky since it was a longer term "borrow" from his sister and he wasn't listed as an authorized driver. I felt bad since he was a neighbor and all of that, but not bad enough to give him money I didn't have.

I mean, I know that they HAVE bumpers, but only after several inches of plastic and fiberglass that have to crumple first. So much more money to fix, and so much more difficult.

I love that. I'm serious, no 'no bumper' cars for me. I love seeing wrecks with trucks where the truck has barely a scrape and the other car is totaled.

Agreed. Steel is real. It's one of the reasons I've held off getting an off-road bumper. I said I'd wait until I destroyed the original ones...and it's been 6 years. To be fair, I don't off-road anything with crazy exit and entrance angles.

I shudder to think what would happen if they backed into my Golf R. Now, I'm sure there's a ton of good safety reasons that bumpers are the way they are now, and yeah, id much rather pay a deductible instead of get paralyzed or die.

They are designed that way now for 'safety reasons', like you said. When the plastic/fiberglass crumples, it already slows down the other vehicle pretty significantly before hitting the actual bumper. It makes it less jarring for the passengers, and thus safer. Kinda like the water jugs on freeways.
The trade off is that you can look at the plastic 'bumper' wrong and it will dent or tear and cost thousands of dollars to properly fix, vs a steel bumper that might not even need to have a paint touch up.

I'm sure car manufacturers actually love this. They can make their vehicle fall apart faster and thus sell more of them, all under the name of government mandated 'safety regulations'.

It's so hard to find a clean 3rd Gen T4R without dinged bumpers nowadays. I think the real steel bumpers are what's kept a LOT of these vehicle out of the scrap yards. A simple plastic 'bumper' dent is enough to total a vehicle nowadays, even vehicles with plenty of life left. They are just too expensive to replace/ fix. You can't just bolt a new one one on in 20 minutes; you have to replace any body panels that are attached to it as well, and that can span to the roof and even to the other end of the car.
