That portion of the housing is stout and made to handle getting drug on some rocks, I just cannot see the benefit in losing crucial amounts of ground clearance at what is already the lowest point on our trucks. I wheel with guys with them and they all hit them where i think they would have cleared or just barely grazed a rock instead. A guy with a 2nd gen Taco i wheel with removed one mid trail because of the lose of ground clearance.

That's just the way i see them and dont think the negative outweighs any positive. I would be more inclined to just weld a piece of 3/16" or 1/4" plate to the bottom if i ever decided that the area was looking thin or weakened from rock contact. Not to mention they seem stupid expensive.

Yeah, at $300-400, way overpriced. If you have a locker, then it's maybe worth protecting the locker. You can get an actuator skid plate for much less. Electric Locker Motor Guard | Marlin Crawler, Inc.

There are others for around $65 as well. I know someone posted another one up here a while back, but I don't know where it is.

I agree protecting the actuator is worth the price of admission, and doesnt result in losing any ground clearance, but, i dont think that is what the OP is talking about.

Agreed about the bottom of the housing, its stout. I guess my concern is the back side of the the clam, that is just sheet metal, and not very thick (so ive been told). I am concerned about the clearance issue as well, not to mention weight and as you said they are stupid expensive.
