Brake Line Replacement Issue

Hi all - the dealer wants to charge about 1700 to replace the passenger side brake line on my 2004 Sport V6, 110,000 miles, saying it involves 10 hours of labor to drop the gas tank, etc. They won't just replace where leak occured saying adjacent areas are rusty. Was also suggested it may not be worth it...? This is a solid Runner.

Would appreciate any input comments on the info received from the dealer, advice, etc...Thanks much.

Post up some photos of your undercarriage. My dad had a similar issue, and an independent shop did it for about $600.

thats a lot. i understand the complexity of replacing it but when your budget is low, you can always do it cheaply.

i was checking my own line too and thought the rusty flaking brakeline might need some work too. i would buy the flaring tool and just replace the rusted part and take a friday off to deal with it.

Thanks for those comments, guys...I apologize for not returning to check in sooner, but truth be told another issue has already cropped up, will need to start another inquiry on that, and pay attention. Bad run of luck lately, that is for sure.

So the deal in the brake lines...don't know why I said 'passenger side', two lines go to the back on the driver side. I crossed checked the problem with another busy and reputable shop, and they said over the phone the labor tab would be steep, close to a grand. Not very far off what was quoted by the dealer. And they couldn't get to it right away. The vehicle is my DD, so I was between a rock and a hard place.

Long story short, when the dealer started pulling everything apart, they saw the gas tank straps were pretty much rusted and gone, so they replaced those and the lines, too, which didn't add to labor costs. They did give me a couple hundred dollar discount and a loner vehicle for 4 days, so in the end made the best of a bad situation.

Next up power steering fluid leak, crap.

Post up some photos of your undercarriage.

I do remember the shop saying that they had to pull it apart to get to where the burst was, but the lines were in pretty bad shape.

FYI - This is not a Christmas tree you want to see while driving along at 75 mph on the expressway, not to mention the ear piecing audible warning...:Cry: LOL

What's going on there?

On a side note, I had to replace my main brake hard line on one of my other vehicles. Looking at the 4Runner, it does look like a labor intensive job since they routed it over the gas tank. I hope mine doesn't ever go out.

If the cluster ever looks like this, you might have blown out the brake line...LOL

Post-damage control, I can laugh about it.
