brake noise when selecting reverse

OK so I looked through some threads but didn't find "THE exact" issue I feel I have.

so i start my truck/ press the brake and and put it in "neutral" - no brake noise

I then press the brakes and select drive/reverse and (insert brake noise) I have not noticed other 4runners doing this this bad.
(kind of like the brakes are not able to hold the truck in place as its dropping in gear causing the rotors to creep forward enough to emit the noise???)HELP!:sobbing:



I think aside from needing to double pump my brakes here and there usually they work great.

new calipers all around/ pads too and a (DOT4) flush of the Master Cylinder.

how new are the pads and rotors? They have a break in period in which a layer of pad material sticks to the rotor. Until there broken in they may take a little more pedal effort to stop. Also if there not broken in properly you can get the warped rotor effect where basically more pad material sticks to one spot on the rotor that others giving you a vibration in the steering during braking.

with new pads, rotors, and a fluid flush your brakes should be top notch. I know I just put new rotors on the front and noticed my brakes felt a little weaker but I'm assuming mine still need to go through there brake in period.

The Pads are about 7months old now and with 13,000K they should be properly broken-in I don't have any bad shudder or serious vibration at speeds. its only when I am at full stop and have brakes pressed firm/ shifting into drive or reverse it will make a loud (uuuurrrnnntttt) noise... but if I shift from drive to park (no noise) or shift to drive (makes noise) then into reverse (no noise)...it also lurches about 1/1000 of an inch (forward/backwards) as the transmission selects the gear and torques up ...this should be normal i think for our trucks.

Do you get any Brake noise when you shift into drive/reverse?

I get a tiny lurch forward, however I'm not certain I'm the best candidate to compare to as I've re-geared so theres slightly more pulling power at low RPM's for me. Also I have the 12.5" (smaller) rotors.

I remember my dad had a tacoma and complained of a similar issue. He said when he asked toyota about it they claimed it was normal. But I also remember his brakes being considerably more responsive than mine.

also (not sure if this really matters or not) but My brake fluid cap says DOT 3 only. You stated that you used DOT 4 could that have a negative effect for you?

I remember noticing it when I bought it but it needed brakes and rotors so I didn't think too much on it... then come to find out about the "CALIPER FROZEN ISSUE" lol replaced all 4 calipers while I was at it and did a flush with (dot4)

I recently painted my font calipers and was looking for anything that could cause this but everything is tight and where it should be...

also I forgot to mention I feel "light" brake peddle vibration as I select gears (I also think this is normal for our particular Toyota trucks)

It's very possible it could be that dot4 fluid not working under the same pressure loads as dot3/ aka the fluid the system was designed to use... I may pm. BlackWorks as I know he has seen a lot of stuff!!! mayhaps someone here can enlighten me as to the technical variances of the dot3 vs. dot4 and how is effects these kinds of systems.

I remember choosing the dot4 because it was more hydroscopic(term?) resistant and could handle higher temps..

do you feel a jerk when you're shifting from park to reverse? or is it just noise that you're hearing? if you have to double pump the pedal, it can be air in the lines.
 
after searching a bit it seems the only difference between DOT3 and DOT4 is heat capacities. It seems normal to use DOT4 in a DOT3 system for better brake performance under higher temperatures. However it seems unpopular to use DOT3 in a system rated for DOT4

The double pumping had me thinking air too but this is my 3rd bleed of the brakes and it has not changed the symptoms. NO "jerks" here :moon:

The double pump isn't always necessary; I just prefer lots of brake force built-up when coming to a stop. I think the cure for the double pump will be braided stainless steel brake lines. Mushy pedal is complained about enough to where its like the (calipers) only thing you can do is replace it or live with it.

But this noise seems at odds with my experiences with Toyota's... its not super loud but I am fairly sure my neighbor can hear me back out of my drive way and place it in gear from his house. its a medium and I quote the enunciation here (uuurrrrnnnntttt)

Thanks for this! The next time I do a flush I will go back to the dot3 just to see if it makes a difference.

I bet if I went to Toyota they would tell me it's normal just like they told your old man... I'm not worried about it too much because it's not affecting performance. Its annoying for sure though when everyone looks over to see "whats that noise!?"

dot4 can be used in place of dot3, without issue.


and, i think what you're describing is normal.
 
I am having the same exact problem with my 2014 4Runner. Making those sounds only when the car is at a stop and shifted from P to R or R-D. I started hearing the sound within the first month after we purchased the 4Runner. I contacted Toyota and was told "the car needs to be broken into" Really? We purchased a brand new Tacoma 6 months prior to the 4Runner and never had that happen. Anyway during the first service we told them about the sound, they told us they never heard anything while doing the service. Two weeks ago we took it in again, they said it was noise was due to insufficient lubrication at factory. Bought the car home and 3 days later it started make the noise again. Called them back took the 4runner back. They called me at the end of the day to say they "don't know what the problem is" they have to keep the car over night. Results of second time -Rear rotors and pads glaze. Really my car is one year old but only has 4,500 miles. I really don't know what to do already.
 
Yeah I have that same Issue. Every morning When I back up I heal a sqeek from the brakes. I can count at this every morning without fail ..did you ever get a fix for it ? Also I have noticed like you when I am at a red light about 30sec after I stop the whole 4R lunges Forward a tad on its own.

Are you sure its not rust on rotors? My 4runner will squeak also when first starting the vehicle since the rotor is full of rust but once the rotors have made a few full rotations the sound disappears as well as the rust. All my vehicles have this rust every morning (05 4runner, 12 Rogue, 13 Accord).
As for it lunging forward do what Wadle5 mentioned which is lubricating the driveshaft and hopefully this will stop the lunging for a while.
