Brake upgrade

Time for another set of brakes on the 2003 4Runner Limited. Got near 100K out of this set so I do pretty go on them.

I am going to rebuild all the calipers this time around to replace all the stuff that has 250K on it at this point.

I saw a video where a guy was putting a set of 4 piston Tundra calipers on them and they supposedly bolt right up.

231mm calipers

13WL casting

Anybody done this? He mentioned 2002 4Runner but I am hoping its the same for the 03.

I believe the 4th gens already use the same castings as the 1st gen Tundras. :shrug: At least, that is what has been said on a similar thread.

Get yourself some drilled n slotted rotors, ceramic pads, and stainless steel brake lines. I think you'll be happy with the results.

Yep, 1st gen Tundras use the same exact 13WG and 13WL calipers (and 319mm rotors) in the front as 4th gens.

If you want a slight upgrade, you can install the 13WH calipers and corresponding 338mm rotors that came on the Sport and some Limited models. They'll fit with just a bit of trimming/bending of stock the dust shield. You'll also have to run 17" or larger wheels.

I did exactly what runnerAK is suggesting and I cant complain one but, if youre replacing everything anyway, take the jump! you wont regret it!!

So, with the exception of the slightly larger rotor option (I do have a 17" wheel), there is no real caliper upgrade in terms of design and pistons.

I don't see any real benefit in the additional 19mm of rotor size in this case.

Looks like I will rebuild the stockers, and slap on some new pads and rotors.

I agree with you in theory.

I have never had an issue with clamping force but couldn't remember the caliper size seeing as the last time I changed out the brakes was 100K ago.

Rebuild kits are cheap so I will probably stick with the stockers.

Heck...she is due for a timing belt (150K overdue actually) so she will appreciate any and all love that she gets.
