In the process of trouble shooting a battery drain(turned out to be the anti lock brake power wire) I unhooked the power line and the drain went away. the problem now is the brakes intermittently work normal (normal pedal) or stiff hard pedal with no play before activating brakes resulting in the brake pads dragging on the disc , of course brakes get hot. now it doesn't matter if the power is hooked up for the antiknock brakes or not. its got 300K on the vehicle, I don't want to spend a fortune at a shop but I was hoping to use it for a few more years. has anyone heard of this problem before

Have you checked it with ODB scanner for codes? If you are planning on keeping it for several more years, I would just start replacing everything related to the system starting with the ABS brake module/pump motor and see if the problem persists. I agree with psalm, if your problem was the power wire to the ABS module I'd bet something went bad in there and was shorting out the wire
the problem with the shot gun approach is all that stuff with the antilock brake system would add up to way more than the vehicle is worth, those are very expensive components. I was hoping someone else had been thru this. there was no check engine lite but I'll check for OBD codes anyway, and also no ABS light except when I remove power from the system
ABS/Airbag (SRS) cannot be checked with an OBD scanner. The codes must be flashed through the engine bay diagnostic port.

This would be a good topic to Ask Scotty Kilmer's advice. He is trouble shooting expert and has tons of experience with Toyotas.
I really hope that was satire. The only thing Scotty Kilmer is good at is yelling obnoxiously at a camera, making biased claims with no evidence or based on 80's vehicles, and coming up with click bait.
You forgot about his real talent which is convincing people with no car knowledge that he is highly knowledgeable.

figured it out
I had 2 separate problems at the same time the ABS module was bad at least as far as drawing down the battery when the vehicle was parked, new abs module was over 1000 from dealer, I took a chance for 50 and bought used on ebay and battery draw went away. dragging brakes was still there(front) I changed the master cylinder and now the brakes work, must have a valve in there that wasnt letting all the brake fluid go back to the master cylinder when the brakes heated up, now everything works normal, I never saw a master cylinder act like that before. also had to replace brake pads they were as thin as paper. (back in the saddle again) the runner has now reached 299k miles on original motor and trans. should join the 300k club soon
