brakes sticking on my t4r

hi guys for somke reason my brakes are sticking on my 4runner! u can take off in drive and it will hold and not want to go no where then i put it in R and back up and they will pop and unstick and then it works till i make a sudden stop and it dose it again. The brakes seem very touchy as well as soon as i push the brakes they grab fast. We took off both front calipurs today and took them all apart and cleaned the pistions well to make sure and it still dose it so im thinking it might be the backs and if so what would cause them to stick on the drums.

There's a little hole on the backside of each rear wheel hub where you can adjust the drums/shoes. Take a screwdriver and get it there and theres a little notch inside, you can adjust how tight the drums/shoes are. I'd try that first. A little hard to explain, but it's like a little gear/notch and you can click it up or down, tighten/loosen. You'll see what I mean when you look at it.

im not questioning your knowledge now. ive changed both my rear seals because i had one that was raining gear lube. yes it got all over my brakes but it was far from making them grab harder, being it was oil all over them. im just curious as to why you think your rear drums sticking has anything to do with gear oil being the culprit. again, not being a Dik, just asking

Also, you might want to bleed your brakes and put all new fluid in.

ok i will check them out i have changed the seals not to long ago when i bought it in spring so they souldnt be leaking again. I will try to tighten the pads up some

The seals wont have anything to do with it. LOL you mean loosen the pads??

Clean all the mechanical components well. Apply little lube to the brake shoe adjuster threads. Check all the springs.

Gear oil on the shoes can swell the linings causing them to lock up the drums. It's pretty common and falls into the category of 'known phenomenon.'

I agree with the post above, clean, lube and adjust everything. Don't forget the bellcrank gap on the backside. Too wide, and the auto adjuster will go two clicks at a time causing lockup or sticking. I had to do this two years ago.

This exact thing happened to me also. It was my driver side rear tire. Inspect rear brakes and see if everything is all together. While you are in there you will see the "gear dial" already mentioned that can be accessed from back of tire. Adjust that and you will see that it moves your brake shoes closer or farther away from the drum. Adjusting it worked for me. May have to fine tune it from back of tire after test drive. But it adjusts on it's own as well.

I have the same problem right now. Take off the drum and check to see if theres any diff oil seeping.

Always clean out the rear differential breather when doing any work back there. That will help keep gear out of the brakes.

Also, when doing the brakes make sure the shoes slide on the bottom block properly.

Hey folks,

I have the problem with the sticking rear brake and needs some help. Here is what I have done.

1. Axle seals are good, there is not any gear lube seeping out.
2. Drum brakes are super clean, pulled them apart and did a full cleaning job and check all components. Nothing looks back.
3. E Brake appears to be functioning properly; no sticking.
4. I disconnected E brake from drum just to be sure nothing was getting hung up, still a no go.
5. Full bleed on the system - great peddle.

Only thing I have not done is replace the wheel cylinder, but that seems to be fine anyways.

Thoughts?
