Broken tooth from Crown Wheel

Hi all,

I took my 93 4runner to have the Transmission & Diff oils changed. When replacing the oils the mechanic found a broken tooth from the Crown Wheel from the front diff.

Should I be concerned about this at all ? The
Toyota dealer was quoting something like $1000 to replace the crown wheel. Obviously I can't afford it. Can I just leave it for now. Question is what kind of damage is that going to cause down the track.

How often do you use the 4wd?

Btw, I think the crown you're talking about is either the ring or pinion. I'm not familiar with that term.

I don't do serious 4WD but I do take it out a bit when I go fishing. What we call Crown Wheel here in Australia would be the ring in your speak I'd imagine.

I say pull it yourself start with driveshaft drain fluids pull axle shafts yank third and go to a driveline shop they will probably get you out the door for around 400 or less if you bring the third only... if you can use wrenches and sockets about the only other 2 things I would recommend for you is a chiltons manual and take pictures as you go color references go a long way.. the process itself is only as complex as you want to make it...

Don't forget he's in Austrailia. That $400 will end up being $600-800.

Pulling the 3rd member isn't that bad of a job though as mentioned. The worst thing that can happen is the thing is corroded in and you have to do some banging and chiseling. The metal is really hard though and can take some abuse.

last time I did a 3rd it ran me about 300 I cannot see it costing more then the 400 range for where he is but I could be wrong since I don't live in ROO (rat) country.....

$400 is going rate around here for parts and labor. Austrailia is typically 50% higher as compared to similarly prices components in the States. I'd almost guarantee he's over $600...
