Bumper mounting HELP!

So I'm planning on building a custom plate bumper for my 98 4Runner. I would like it to have a winch and be pretty strong, and I have and idea of the shape and everything id like, however I don't know the best way to mount it to the frame (preferably without welding it on) so that it is strong enough to winch off.

I'm basing my design of DJs front bumper build from a few years ago. Minus the 1/4 angle plate across the rails

If anyone has any pointers or advice on how I should go about mounting the winch plate/bumper please let me know!

Who/what is DJ?

I think that if you just look at the mounting setups of the big name fab shops (addicted, CBI, shrockworks, etc.) you should be able to get a pretty good idea... I like the way the addicted bumpers mount. They seem stout.

Djtc, he built a bumper on here awhile ago, if you look up DJs bumper build you can find it.

Anyway, I've thought about sending them an email because it's hard to tell from the pictures they have, and people tend to not post pictures of the mounting points, but I'll dig some more and see if I can find anything...I just don't want to be the idiot that rips his own bumper off when I start winching :lmao:

I'm planning on welding in a 2x3 square tube crossmember on the end of the frame rails and bolting to that, probably with sleeves around the bolts just in case. More than likely I'll end up notching the tube into the frame and plating around the front body mounts to add some strength.

Here's a pic of my Shrockworks mounts if it helps. They slide & bolt onto the front of the frame.



Then bolt onto the inside of the bumper.

Look at how Addicted Offroad ties their shop built crossmember into the frame. Unfortunately they won't sell it separately, but it gives you some ideas.

I based my bumper off of one of their xmembers I found on a junked 3rd gen in combination with a Trail Gear 2nd gen winch mount. It took some fabrication to get it all to work together, but it proved to be a decent start to a homebuilt bumper.
