Burnt Rubber Smell

Lately I've been noticing a distinct burnt rubber smell after driving the 4Runner. I don't notice it inside the truck, but as soon as I park and get outside I can smell it. My son and wife have noticed it also.

Has anyone else ever had this happen? Any ideas on what it could be?

Common: Belts slipping, dragging.
Less common: Hot tires from dragging brakes.
Also: Rubber part or hose has come in contact with hot exhaust somewhere.

Belt? Either loose or a failing bearing somewhere. Although I would think you would get a squeal.

I would also look for anything rubber near the exhaust, or the manifold. Maybe one of those rubber mounts for the exhaust broke and is dangling on the pipe somewhere.

Leaking valve cover gaskets like mentioned already. I had the same problem described.

Dripping oil onto the exhaust manifold = burning rubber smell.

I noticed oil around the corner of the VCG myself, so it might be time for me too. It stinks mostly when I park with the engine running pointing uphill.

To those that do the valve cover gaskets, make sure you reseal the half moons in the back of the cylinder head with FIPG or RTV equivalent and replace the cam plugs as well. Also consider replacing the spark plug tube seals as well while the valve covers are off.

Less then 100 bucks if you get new half moons, cam plugs, pcv valve and grommet. Less if you don't and re-use the old ones.

Chassis Grease

Another take: If you've recently greased your u-joints and driveline it could be excess grease getting onto the muffler and exhaust.
