*Buy or Not? - 1994 Toyota 4Runner SR5 3.0 V6 Automatic..

My friends ex girlfriend just junked her t4r because of a leak in (I believe the tranny front seals) not 100% sure, but the mechanic that looked at it said that she blew the tranny.

I found an automatic transmission for $350 USD, that will be taken out of a running t4r, and sold to me 4 hours away in Denver. So at least i'll know it will work for now.

She wants 1000 (I'm thinking $750) for the truck, in great condition, with a supposidly rebuilt engine, with 192,000 on the body.

Then the $350 for the tranny, and of course 60 bux to cover gas to go pick up the transmission, and come home to install it at a later time. Most likely when I find a friends garage to work in, and some tools to do the job.

I have done tranny / engine replacement jobs, but never on a 4wd, and never a toyota. At this point, I just wonder if it's a deal worth dealing, or if this fish should just float belly up. I hear bad things about trannys in automatics, and the warmth of the head gasket being inches away from the exhaust. However I just need to know if buying it is the right thig to do.
I'd love a manual, however for now this truck just needs to run before another 500 inch snow season..

Excepting all good and bad ideas.

Looks like you currently have a second gen as well? It might not be a bad idea for a parts truck if the repair doesn't work out.

It's hard to gauge it's condition or anything, but if you have the parts and the ability to put together a nice truck at that price in my area that would be a great deal. If I had the time and the ability I'd do it.

I just bought a 1994 4runner 3.0 yesterday for 400$. It needs a little bit of work to get another sticker but definitely worth it!! It still has a sticker on it thats good until January. I need to do a little body work, get bigger tires, replace the windsheild, and the power steering rack. It runs now, but im going to put money into it before snow falls and beat my Taurus to death!! haha

Just got the truck officially, signing the pink tomorrow.. $600.00 USD. 2 more weeks and i'll have the tranny, and then i'll be road worthy, first time in four years... YEY! (Anyone in Maine wanna buy my Eclipse? Cause i'm in Colorado...)

i just paid a grand for a 94 with 105k needed water pump and rad, body is a little rough but i think it was a steal, your has great potental, good luck!
