Buying a high mileage 4runner, verson 4,000,000

Not to high jack this thread but how does one know if 4lo actually ingages? Are the dash lights a good indicator?
I'm looking for a V8 so it's always in 4hi.

The dash light will show that it's engaged (4LO) and you'll feel a noticeable difference in the gear changes/you'll feel like you're capable of making the world turn backward.

If it beeps when you try to engage it, you either haven't done it right or you have an actuator issue

So, I found one more 4runner near me that is pretty cheap.

It's a Gold with beige leather, 2003 V8 Limited with 164k. I just checked the service history on Toyota website and it has records from 154k all the way back to 24k. Seems like they took it to the dealer for everything.

If these 2 truck fall through, I might go look at that one. It may have the highest mileage, but it was at least looked after.

I just bought a 2003 w/ v8 that has a few minor issues, but the only one I need to fix is an o2 sensor (A/f actually). It was a p0031, I replaced the sensor and instantly got p0032 that won't go away (31 went away). Now I'm at a loss of what to do next.

It had about 197k on it when I bought it, I have replaced the rear pads/rotors and it needs front pads I think. Also replaced the tires. I miss the minivan (which we actually still have) but my wife wanted another 4runner, we used to have a 1998. I do love the fact the 4runner has a hitch and 4wd, the minivan has trouble getting up our driveway (at our future home site)

Well, sad to say that I did not get a 4runner.

The black one got away. They had lowered the price to $5900 and I could get there right away. Someone put a deposit on it and it was gone before I could do anything about it.

The white one is still for sale. They had lowered the price to $6999. I offered them $5500, but never heard back.

I never really went after the gold one. I couldn't get the high mileage out of my head. I'm sure either of them will be a fine truck, but I just couldn't do it.

I ended up going the complete opposite direction with my next vehicle. I picked up a Volvo XC90. A 2004 for $6500 with only 77k. It's not a rough and ready 4runner, but it will fit my family and commuting needs and it's just as big or bigger inside.

Maybe the next time I'll pull the trigger on a 4runner. I feel like I will own one eventually.

Sad to hear, but glad you found something you like! I looked into XC70s and XC90s before my 4 Runner, but decided I wanted something more truck-like. They're still great cars though!

Good prices

Man, those prices you were finding on '04 4Runners were great. I just paid $3k for a 2000 SR5 with 264k miles, bad clear coat and bad head gaskets... haha, it's actually in really great shape and ran smooth even needing gaskets and probably heads. Everything else works too expect the rear wiper.

Mine won't be my DD but I'd like to get it back in top shape where it could be. I plan to use the heck out of it starting soon.

That XC90 was a good find, too.
