Buying a locker.

Hoyal - I don't know if you made this purchase yet, but if you haven't made up your mind I would check out an Aussie. I ordered direct from Home page - Aussie Lockers - Welcome to Torq Masters Home of the Aussie Locker for $290 and did the install myself in the rear of my 99 4Runner. I took it out this past weekend on trails that I had run with open diffs multiple times. It was rainy and slick out. The Aussie in the rear made more of a difference than my tires and lift combined. I would have been able to do almost all of the trail in 2WD if I could have kept my speed lower. When in 4-Lo I easily went over every obstacle at a controlled rate of speed. I'm sure you'll have comparable results with a Detroit since its a lunchbox too but I thought I'd throw in my unsolicited 2 cents.

Detroit isn't a lunchbox, I don't think... they used to make a lunchbox called the Lockrite, but last I heard they'd stopped making them and were getting hard to find.

The Detroit is a full diff, not a drop-in like the Lockrights and Aussies. It requires full disassembly, and an experienced hand with specialty tools for assembly. It IS one of the toughest, most dependable lockers you can get, though, so it's worth the effort--those that you can put in yourself are fine for a while, but they'll break easier than a full-diff style if you plan to pound on it much. There are numerous places that carry Detroits, as it is very popular (Trail-Gear, Marlin Crawler, Randy's Ring & Pinion, to name a few, but just about everyone carries it).

Slow and careful until you get used to it. I drove half the winter here in Salt Lake with a Spartan in the back, and it was fine after I learned how it behaves. You'll be fine.

I have Aussies front and rear and love them, although like any locker they can be noisy at times.
$100 is a steal for a detriot!
Anyways winter driving isn't that hard, just a little different. I drive up Mt. Hood in the winter many many times each year and never even have to lock my hubs because of my rear locker. Just have to take it slow until you are used to they way they act in low traction situations.
