What model between 2020 - 2014 is best

Hello, I have a 2016 TE with 102k miles. It has the full 4x4 modes including the rear locker.

I'm thinking of getting a newer model in white but not a 6th gen. What is the sweet spot say between 2020 - 2024? I don't care about the model much except it needs to have the 4x4 modes with rear locker similar to my current Trail Edition.

Is there any specific tech that you want in the newer versions? From what I can tell, 2020 brought in CarPlay, 2021 LED headlights, 2022 blind sport monitoring/traffic alerts. I don't know if anything else changed these years, they'll be largely similar to what you already have.

Yes,CarPlay and a white color to reduce interior heat. Blind spot monitoring is a win. So I guess 2022 or newer.

I would look into updating the head unit in the 4runner before I swapped it out for a newer model. It's a fairly easy job and made my 2016 feel like a 2026. There are tons of options but I got the Stinger branded one. Good luck.

I replaced my 2012 Trail Edition with 203K miles, which I gave to my brother as he needed a vehicle.

I bought a used 2019 TRD Off Road from the same dealer that I bought the 2012 TE from. It's pretty much identical to the TE, mechanically... floor mount 4WD shifter, MTS and Crawl control, locking rear diff. Did not have the sunroof or slliding cargo tray, no big deal to me.

I decided to go with the 2019 because it still uses a key to start, which I like and I'm used to. My wife's hybrid Camry has a fob & push button start, I don't mind it, but I like my old school key. Which also can raise or lower the hatch window.

As others have noted, Car Play/Android Auto started in 2020, so I decided to live without it.

Also, the display above the center vents on the dash is now just a clock, I miss the old, more informative display, the digital display above the steering wheel doesn't do the job as well. There's a thread about that, somewhere.

Thanks for the feedback. The 4x4 floor shifter with rear locker is a minimum for me. I raised the priority of the avoidance system higher now. White or Silver color. I doubt silver reduces heat absorption as much as I first thought. I have a silver water container on my bike and it gets really hot in the sun.

i have the same model as yours, am trying to t/shoot an issue am having with the AC, i cant seem to turn the AC off, and have only the fan blowing. dperessing the ac button to turn it off doesnt do anything.

It sounds like you have the temperature knob turned all the way counter-clockwise to MAX A/C. Turn the knob one click clockwise off of MAX A/C, and the A/C should turn off, as designed.

As for which to get between 2014-2020, I'd also vote for the 2019. I specifically didn't want the easier to steal keyless entry, the Entune version of Carplay and Android Auto, and the Safety Sense stuff, including the monitoring through the SOS system. Which is why I bought a new 2019 TRD ORP, when the 2020's were arriving at the dealers.

Yes, the 2019 still has an EDR, but pretty much every vehicle with OBD II does.

For me it is any year before the nanny systems, I drive for a living and don't need, or want, Nanny systems in my personal vehicle. I have a 2018 TRD ORP, and feel it is the perfect year to not have these systems, still has a key, which I also like, and doesn't have any Nanny systems, things you miss out on Carplay (can be easily upgraded if that is a need) buttons to roll down the rear window on the outside, could also be upgraded to if wanted.
