Buying my first 4runner

Hey all, just created my account.

I’m not a car guy and pretty much a newb. I am, however, an outdoor enthusiast, camper, backpacking fan, etc. I’m in the market for a new ride that can handle moderate off road trails, camping excursions, and New England winters, that is also durable and reliable, and the 4runner seems to fill the bill.

Here’s my question I’m hoping you can give me some input on. Check out the 1st and 3rd 4runners in this screen shot. Same year, same mileage, but one is $9000 more expensive. Like I said I’m a newb, so I’m not sure why this is the case, and it has me worried something weird is going on, like the cheaper one was in an accident and never fully repaired or something crazy like that. Although the carfax says no accident or damage was reported, and the photo doesn't show any noticeable damage.

Skullduggery afoot, or just a good deal?

Google and Search are your friend. I can tell you instantly what the problem is. DEALERS!! I would never buy a used car from a dealer...do your research and buy private party.

ignore the flak, here is some info but not all inclusive:

1. it depends on how they are listed as, the 39k could be listed as a demo which technically can be sold as new
2. options, is it a base SR5 vs a SR5 prem or has more options than a base
3. different strokes for different folks (replace folks with dealer name)
4. one in an accident, one without?

5. fleet/rental lease vs a trade in?
6. down south registration vs 1st up north (flooded titles do this)
7. this is a biggie, 4x2 vs 4x4

lots of variables that you will need to see first hand.

and the best advice, for 39k you can get a 2015 TE for that price or less. hell for 34-36k you could get a 2015 SR5 brand new.

I'm in the same boat (looking for a newer 4Runner). Most dealers want as much for a year old vehicle (sometimes 2 y/o) with 10-20k miles as I can buy a new one for.

And many ask as much as for one with a basic package as one with a premium package, and many can't even tell you which one it has. Yes, you can get premium without leather.

Very frustrating to say the least as I refuse to purchase a brand new vehicle, and definitely will not purchase a used one for new price!

Fortunately I'm not in a hurry, but I do lack patience.

Thanks for the input and the advice. Yeah, lots of things to consider. The carfax shows no reported accidents or damage, but who knows. It's also a 4x4, so that's not it.

Nice to feel I'm a bit more informed before I head in for a test drive.
