We'll, the title pretty much sums up my question. Does anyone know if our 3rd gens have a cabin air filtration system? I read that many companies started using them in 2000.

I don't recall ever seeing any pics. What I do remember is reading about it though. Either here or maybe on one of the other Toyota forums.

Here is one of the two prominent models, one I believe can affix to the rear of the 3rd Gen where you have the four plastic caps in the roof. Only OEM option I came across for this was a fishing rack Toyota offered. Believe the second generation unit attached here is installed on a Prius.

How would this work since the air comes in through the vents? By the time the filter does anything Ive already breathed the air coming from the vents

These are all secondary systems filtering air already present in the cabin area. So it's not the AC filter but a standalone.

Cabin filter solution
So I know this is an old thread but just wanted to share the project in case anybody wanted to take it on. It takes some effort but this solution works flawlessly. Enjoying dust free air and interior cleanliness. Don’t know if I would do it again but I like a challenge and was determined to figure it out during the winter when I had some down time. Here is what I did.
-I removed plastic cowl
-The opening on the drivers side is an exact match shape wise to the section on the passenger side.
-I marked the area in the exact shape and used a uni biand saw to cut the access
-Air intake is oval with 1 flat corner on firewall side.
-I used a piece of aluminum and cut it large enough to cover the hole but small enough to clear wiper motor.
-I cut a square hole the exact dimensions inside the aluminum cover to accommodate a cabin filter for a 2016 - up Jeep Wrangler.
-I used 1” aluminum angle to make a filter rack and used heavy duty silicon the seal everything up.
-I checked clearance occasionally by turning wipers on.
-I temporarily sealed up the access hole with Butyl flashing tape not asphalt based due to odor
-I am working on a permanent solution for an access panel but the flashing is working great and is completely covered by the plastic cowl.
As stated above. It requires effort but is definitely not overly difficult. This has been worth it due to the decreased dust and increased performance in cooling and defrost. I noticed minimal air flow drop on fresh mode. Obviously recirc mode is the same since it doesn’t pass through the filter. Let me know if you have any questions
