Calling all stockers'...or would that be the non-'builds'?

My condolences to you on the Land Rover. My buddy bought one years back because at the time they were the urban chic vehicle de jour and that thing was the biggest POS for the money I've ever seen.

60's technology Olds aluminum V8 motor, electrical system designed and installed by three monkeys and a ride that could only be described as "unique".

He started having electrical issues at about the 4 month mark. It was in the shop twice and they could not figure it out so they started replacing things like the ECU and MAP.

He traded it in after eleven months and took like a $5K loss but was happy to be rid of it.

Friend of mine had one. He used to comment that every oil change cost $800 because they always found an oil seal leaking somewhere. He finally traded it in on a LandCruiser and has been a loyal Toyota owner ever since.

I tell you, there are a few on this board who have that same story, present company included. i had a hunter green Disco I-1994, and i love it. when it ran, it was a tank...in snow, dirt, mud, whatever...and then it didnt. i fell in love with being called 'Mr.' at the dealership and being served breakfast when i brought it in for scheduled maintenance that i could barely afford. that dayum thing left me stranded at least 3 times during my ownership. when i traded it in for my pick up, the dealer looked underneath it and said "these daggone LRs just leak everywhere..." i gave it up just as it was about to really get interesting.





SR5 w 3rd row, and i couldnt be happier.

I share that sentiment!! Three long years of repairs & service on my Range Rover but earned quite a few "free" t-shirts. It was the vehicle I always dreamed of owning, when it was running I couldn't have been happier....unfortunately that didn't happen very often. So glad to be back in a 4Runner!

I bought one used that had 50k miles on it. Total POS. It was in the shop every two months. Thank goodness we bought the extended warranty on it. Sold it right when the warranty ended. Loved driving when it was running though.

I am really enjoying this thread. Half-inspired by my dad's '97 4Runner, I got my 2000 Xterra in June of '99 and modified quite a bit (suspension, intake, exhaust, armor, lights, audio, interior and more). Loved every minute of it but then an icy road and a utility pole put a sudden end to that adventure.

Bought my first 4Runner (2003 Sport) in March 2003 kept it mechanically stock for 12 and 1/2 years and it was THE most dependable vehicle I've ever owned. Even the stock Panasonic battery lasted over 12 years. Never failed to get me where I needed to go.

I got the latest one (2015) with all the extra features I wanted (SR5 Premium) and given my needs (daily driver, towing rig, light off-road), don't plan on adding too much. I guess than all depends on how much time I start spending here...

Although most of the modded rigs highlighted on this site are admirable (outright drool-worthy in some cases) I'm happy to see people showcasing the 4Runner as a totally capable vehicle out of the box. Great post!

Man.... ha this truck and 4x4 system did things on Broken Arrow yesterday I NEVER thought possible haha. At least in it's current state. Even crawling up and down the nasty rock ledge in and out of the trail at stock height WITH running boards I almost cleared without touching the boards. Was just sick.

If you've been following my recent thread (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/so-cal/208426-marcs-once-month-adventure-thread.html), I've been allowed to go off-roading with my friends once a month and I've held my wife to that promise since purchasing the rig last year. We've gone to some pretty hairy places causing many a dent underneath making me realize that extra protection (sliders, lower link skids, etc) and 285s for some added clearance are needed soon. All in all, I've been very impressed with this rig in its stock form. Crawl Control is amazing both uphill and downhill and the locking rear diff is superb! I really haven't used the Multi-Terrain Select mode though. Here is a small collection of photos of some of the places we've been.

Will be taking my stock TEP out tomorrow for its first wheeling trip. I am pretty stoked but a little worried. Not about the capabilities as I know it's there, more so about scratching it up as most all trails around here are more ATV sized, places we always take the RZR.

It's my wife's daily driver currently so I can't get to crazy or she will kick my butt. It is going to be my project when paid off and we buy her a new vehicle. Then the full build will start. Until then probably just billies, saw coils, UCA's, and 255 ST MAXX.

What pressure do you guys air down the stock duelers to?

Aired down to about 20 psi. It did pretty good but I definitely could have used more clearance. I got high centered on a dirt berm on one of the hills. It dented in the fuel tank skid pretty good in one spot. Not sure how to get the dent out as it didn't look to easy to get the skid off.

Mine isnt lifted and not very modded. Just some sliders and skid plates. I wheel it almost every weekend. Have taken it to Utah, Colorado, California. Have even wheeled some trails that are considered "difficult" like Broken Arrow Trail in Sedona. Dont plan on lifting until the 100k warrenty is up. It's really amazing what peoples trucks can do right off the showroom floor.
