Agreed, take out the bottom of the back seats (2 - 12 mm bolts I think) and you can fit an air mattress in comfortably. Takes less than 5 minutes.

You don't state what Gen 4Runner you have. The last time I camped in my 4Runner I used an full/twin sized air mattress, but find whatever size fits for yours. Remember there is no electricity when camping, so make sure your pump energy supply cord works in your 4Runner before hand. Mine did, but it was not a powerful pump and I borrowed a fellow off roaders pump since his worked faster. I now have a higher pressure pump that I also use to air up my tires. I did buy a SUV tent, which was awesome! I used it to change clothes in and during the day whilst we were on Hell Hole trail, I left behind the supplies I didn't want bumping along inside of the Runner on the trail. One last suggestion, some black electricians tape. Use this to cover the red blinking car security light! In the pitch blackness, even with your eyes closed, you can still see that light blinking!!

Cabela's. I got mine almost half off price via ebay. My one concern that I'll find out the answer to this summer...those pictures were taken when Ruffian was stock. As you can see from the inside shot, the rear gate doesn't have enough room to fully go up. I have a feeling now with a 3" lift, it's either going to pick up the tent if I don't stake it down tight or the gate will not be able to go up very high. Since I'm not super tall and it's only to crawl inside to go to bed, I'm not worried. Not as worried about changing clothes behind a tree or bush or worse yet, in those yucky toilet pit bathrooms at primitive campsites!

I love your set up Ric. More importantly, you need to let me know if you ever come across another air horn!
x2 on the pads. I found some at Costco, bought two of them and they velcro together to make just enough room for one to sleep on. The only thing, when space is at a premium with all the off roading gear bags, food chests, camping gear and personal items, the pads can take up lots of room. Never mind if you bring along fido too! There's the roof rack of course to tie down things.

I bought a 3" memory foam mattress. The_Mrs. and I sleep very comfortably on it. I store it and our small pillows in a large action packer container, with bedding in a large sleeping bag. Double sleeping bags or just a bunch of blankets are great for comfort, as she will probably fell better comfy with some snuggles. Our setup includes the memory foam pad, a double sleeping bag, pillows, and a couple additional comforters that can be used as covers or as additional bedding depending on the weather. We have since moved our operation to our camping trailer, but the principles are the same. If SHE ain't happy, Y'ALL ain't happy. A good night's sleep goes a long way toward enjoying the trip.
Other options include RTTs or a nice big ground tent with an air mattress or something. Remember to always pack for colder weather than you expect.

Has anyone wired a switch to open the hatch from inside? Since it's all electric it shouldn't be too hard, but I've never had the hatch opened up.

How does the rear gate pull on the tent? Does the tent hold it down ok?

Yes to both questions. If you don't stake down the tent and you shove the gate all the way up...yes. But you don't need to shove the gate all the way up unless you super tall, but then that doesn't matter as you have to lean over to crawl into the back of the SUV. On the trail, I only staked down the front half of the tent since the back half is tied to the 4Runner.
You'll have to look close at my 2nd photo. Look up towards where the bottom half of the gate is pushing the tent tight. Basically there is a chute outside of that one end of the tent. On the inside of the tent, it's like a huge window. If you don't attach tent to the SUV, you can roll up the chute and use that huge window as a regular window. It has a fly window and then the regular outside tent part. That all is supposed to get rolled up if you're using the chute part, which I didn't do. At the campsite, I shoved that edge all the way up to the rear of the 4Runner once I made sure the exhaust pipe was cool. Then once the gates open, you just go easily from the tent to SUV.
It's that chute that the rear gate almost doesn't fit. I'd say when Ruffian was stock, it didn't allow the gate to go up the last maybe 2 inches. Not a big deal, still enough room to get into the back end as you can see. You can push up the gate the rest of the way, but that picks the bottom of the tent off the ground. Not a big deal, the inside of the tent is huge, big enough for a queen mattress, 3 igloos, 2 duffel bags etc. I wasn't planning on sleeping in the SUV, but it was in a very remote area, I was sleeping alone and in bear country and girls rules, damit I wanted to lock myself in my car! lol I got scared of the big creepy crawlies....:spider:
