camping in your T4R?

I've heard of some folks sleeping/camping in their 4Runners. I tried searching but nothing really came up on the 1st page. How do you camp/sleep in your T4R? I've seen some platforms on google etc. Lets see yours!

I'm 6'4", so I don't unless I have to.

I have a couple sheets of plywood cut to fit around the wheelwells that I covered in bluefoam and indoor/outdoor carpet, but I can't stretch out with the tailgate up and never figured a satisfactory way to pitch a fly/dew cover over the back of the truck to cover my feet.

I'm 6'2", I make it work. Just have to lay diagonal but I can't really stretch out.

Install sound-proofing and thermal insulation
If first-gen, install rear window control in rear deck,
Mod deck lamp so you can control from rear-deck without having to scramble over to driver seat and turn on taillights.
Fold rear seats down,
Throw closed-cell foam sleeping pad in there,
Throw good sleeping pad,
Have a beer,
Call it a night

Camping with the 4rnr, no problem. Sleeping in it, big problem. At 6'2" there's no way. At least if comforts involved! Get a great tent. We had a tent trailer for years. Now looking at an off-road teardrop.

I slept in my first gen, at 6'7" it was not comfortable but I made it work. A twin size air mattress fits perfect between the wheel wells.

I've slept in mine 6 or 7 times, about half of those with the top off, and I'm 6' 1". Laying diagonal is a must with the tailgate up. I also get a thick comforter under me, as there seems to be really uncomfortable bars in the floor that kill my back.

Ive (Well me,my wife, and doxin) have slept in the runner many many times. Im just shy of 6ft so with the seats folded down theres a lip from the seat that works well to elevate your feet when you add a pillow or two. Some would complain but we usually hike all day when camping so elevating your feet at night is the best thing you could do in that instance. Ive added a few inches of carpet padding under the rear carpet so it is real nice and cushioned

Yeah I'm 6'4" tall and saw there wasn't much room in the back with the seats folded down in a 2nd gen I took a look at. I've literally been thinking about just buying a truck and living out of the back for a few months when the weather is nice and saving up some money lol. Sounds like that may not be the best idea.:tape:

That's the life if you live in Hawaii! It's warm year round and there is pubic showers. The woman would disagree with me though. :laugh: I wouldn't do that in the PNW though.

Step 3. Buy a pop-up when the time comes

If you pull out the bottom seat it adds a lot of room and if you add the right foam you can make it very comfy. I wouldn't want to live in their though. But I'm sure you can make it work especially if you have a gym membership or somewhere to shower and stuff.

I've slept in it by myself in the cargo area with seats layed down. At 6'3" 320lbs I wouldn't want to share it with my wife daughter, and dog though.

There are folks that use them to travel from here in the states to far away places like Ushaia with a couple of adults sharing the cargo area as a sleeping quarters. They do this for months,or even a year at a time.

I lived out of a VW van one winter when I was working a ski resort. Lots of other guys in the parking lot living out of popups or camper vans or truck beds, a couple other employees but mostly ski bums. The resort had showers in the changing rooms they'd let us use in the early morning.

I dunno anything about these Hawaiians and their pubic showers though. Sounds hinky. :frisky:

If you can make the platform idea work get a memory foam mattress and you will be set.

Dirtco has a nice double tent cot for sale in the classifieds. Looks like a good alternative. Worth a look.

Defrag & ruined Adventures Did It
