Camping Trailer - Hitch Types

Hello all,

What are your experiences with using an articulating hitch for towing a camping trailer when off-road?

I have been looking at the Max Coupler, and saw something cool with the DC-35 articulating hitch on the Patriot Camper (man, that thing is wicked expensive).

Not sure if one of these are required for trailering off-road.

Required? Well it depends how articulated your trailer is going to get or how much opportunity it has to bounce off a ball hitch.

While I haven't "trailered" off-road, I use to work mountain ops year round at a ski resort. I have moved snow guns, utility trailers and other equipment on grades as steep as 35% and a lot off camber tracks. I am most familiar with pintle hooks and lunette rings. These allow a lot more counter articulation than a ball hitch, about 70 degrees and are positively secure.

Something like a poly block also allows 70 degree rotation. It is going to be less "bouncy" compared to a pintle/lunette setup as there is no airgap, a pin goes directly through a close tolerance bore. A quick google suggest that a max coupler is similar to a poly block, at least at first look?

Really though ~$300 for a solid hitch to secure a $10,000+ trailer seems like a no brainer to me.

I use a lock n roll hitch on a m416 style tub trailer and I’ve taken it “off road” a number of times though nothing too serious. I think the biggest positive would be if the trailer rolls over, it doesn’t bring the tow vehicle over with it. Also, the tow vehicle isn’t affected by the articulation of the entire trailer from left to right or front to back.
