Can black gasket maker be used for rear diff?

Took my rear diff out, was wondering if i can use black gasket maker instead of the paper gasket sold at toyota when i put it back in.

I use "The Right Stuff" RTV for just about everything I take apart that needs a FIPG.

To answer your question, yes. Yes you can.

You can absolutely use it on your rear diff, I recommend it in fact. I use it in place of paper and rubber gaskets all the time. It makes stuff a touch harder to separate, but there's no chance of leaking or weeping with black FIPG. You can get Permatex The Right Stuff, or NAPA has a house brand that's equivalent but a little cheaper. They're both good.

I've used the Permatex brand for a few years(30 or so), with good success. For 3rd members Black Hi-temp works fine, but I prefer the Gray because it sets up harder. Not as critical in your application, but for Dana/Spicer style covers it is imperative.
