Can I use an ECU out of a 4runner with ABS in a 4runner without ABS

If I install a factory E-locker in my 4runner I need to swap the ECU. My 4runner is a really odd spec with the 5 speed trans, 3rz engine, and no ABS. I might be able to get an e-locker equipped ECU out of a Tacoma that meets all those criteria except for the no ABS.

I need to pass smog, so I can't have my ECU throwing codes because its looking for an ABS system that doesn't exist. I don't believe that Toyota let you get rear diff lockers without ABS.

Assuming all else is equal, what would happen if I used the ECU out of a vehicle with ABS in my 4runner that doesn't have ABS?

I thought the locker had its own ecu and didn’t really interact with the main one behind the glove box. I might be wrong though.

Using an ecu from an abs vehicle will cause a check engine light, I know from experience I tried to remove my abs pump and it threw a cel code for a speed sensor, so now it’s plugged in and not hooked up to anything

An ECU swap from one 4Runner to another would do nothing but cause trouble for your vehicle. It also isn't the control module that even controls the ABS/4WD/factory e-locker.

It is a different control module that I believe is called the 4WD control module that you are needing to swap from one that has an e-locker factory. I have one of the e-locker 4WD modules laying around somewhere, but I would have to dig through a few totes to find it.

I would seriously suggest just wiring up your own harness to it or buying an aftermarket harness that another company makes for it. It will be way less work and cost significantly less mentally and financially.

Swapping the modules isn't incredibly difficult, but you will need to pull a ton of wires from a donor vehicle if your 4Runner is anything like mine.

RandyBobandy is correct. The e-locker has it's own ECU.
