cant understand so time to vent

you know what, i have been wrenching for about 18 years, in the beginning i made some stupid mistakes but learned from them like we all do, its all a process, and in those almost 2 decades of building, i have come across some really off the stories about others and thought to myself how could they do that. That being said what the heck does it take to work in a dealership garage, i bought my runner as a one owner vehicle, and everything was documented and dealer serviced, and i can't for the life of me understand how in the world could someone install a fuel filter backwards, like mine was. When i went to replace it it was indeed backwards, from a dealership, then to make matters worse, they just so happened to install bosch plugs, at the dealership. How can a place that deals specificlly with Toyota not know to NOT use Bosch plugs, only Denso/NGK, not to mention that they were driven in with a freakin impact gun, every turn to loosen them i gringed in fear that they were going to either snap or strip out the threads, geez, where are these people getting there training at. Please someone make sense of this because i can't.

dealerships cant make money if you dont have a reason to come back. Some kids that became mechanics from high school were only a step above "would you like fries with that?". Its unfortunate that it mechanics like that that give good mechanics a bad name.

exactly what i am saying, its them that give the rest a bad name, and i have no idea what ever dearlership was doing that work, makes any money at all, and its not like they were rebuilding the drivetrain in like 2 days, its simple knowledge stuff, man is this what the world has come to. I tell you what my 6 and 3 year old daughters know more than those "mechanics".

The the fuel filter in backwards and over-torquing the plugs you can blame on the mechanic or his (lack of) training/supervision. That still comes back on management, not the pimply kid. And a decision to use inferior, non-OES plugs--presumably cheaper--has to be a decision at the level of service dept. manager. Somebody is going for every last dime in a very short-sighted fashion. My truck has never been to the dealer (except parts dept.) since it got out of warranty. Those people give me the creeps.

They would air wrench the heck out of my lugs, and they took out the red coolant at 30K and dumped in green. (I wanted the major service done there because I was still in warranty.)

i also try to do all my own work on my cars, as a mechanic/tech, there are just some things i dont even want to bother with after a full day of being shoulder deep under the hood or behind the dash, so i can understand the "f*ck it, let someone else deal with it" mentality. there are just some things id rather pay someone else to do, my own personal time is worth something to me, after all i do have a wife and kid with one on the way. that being said, changing plugs and a fuel filter is not something that i would pay to have done, if i didnt want to do it, id have my 2yo son do it lol. but i dont think the OP had someone else do it, i think it was done before he got the truck, and now that he has done some PM/tune up stuff and has run across this BS work hes pissed as well he should be, i know i would be. check the drain plugs make sure they didnt strip out the threads lol.

As I replaced my plugs a couple of weeks ago, I had to laugh at what I pulled out. Auto lite single electrode plugs, the precious owner installed. Now what I laugh at is the big sign on the font of the engine with single and double electrode spark plugs on it. A big red X on the single electrode ones and a circle on the double, I suppose they just put that there for fun?

At least I got oem densos in now, a whopping $3 a piece at toyota dealership hehe.

lol yeah to say i was peaved is a little bit understated, my wife came out and just took one look at me and started laughing, cause she knew how mad i was, and figured if she laughed i might laugh. And yes it is a supervisors job to actually supervise and check what these guys are doing, but these guys should know what the heck to do at least on the simple stuff. The owner before me by the way of the records did not know how to even pop the hood, but thats ok its not his fault they are idiots. And this is most of the reason why i tell my customers not to go to a dealership, take it to a good mechanic.

Yeah people just don't take as much pride in there work anymore. I know I for one just spent 6+ hours cleaning the underside of my truck mainly under the oil filter because there was 8 years of oil dried up and caked on under there. I still haven't gotten it all but gave up for the day.

I know I will be changing my own oil from now on, and hopefully everything else within reason.

believe me i understand that most people dont have much time in the day to get everything done that they want, even me have full time job, wife, 2 girls, house and everything else, there are times i dont want to touch my projects. But when i make the time to do something, i do it the right way, even if i have to wait until another time to finish it. I just think even in our busy schedules, there are lots of people that find time to do the jobs, and i think that it just boils down to lazy people, it seems like more and more people are getting lazier by the day, and that annoys me. If you are going to be lazy then just dont touch anything, leave it to someone that takes pride in their work and will do a good job, and more importantly they will do it the right way.

In my opinion most things like this really come down to overpopulation. There's no accountability anymore because we lack the interpersonal relationships of the past. A lot of people just don't care because they don't know/see the person that they're doing the work for. If they knew that the car they were working on were a friends or someone that they knew somehow, they'd probably take a little more time to make sure the job was done right. Because if it wasn't, they would hear about it in some form.

you have a point, things arent what they used to be, everyone is always so busy, and doesnt care about anyone or anything else, just themselves. And if people did care more about each other and the relationships they could have things would be alot different.
