Cargo basket question

As the new owner of a 2016 Trail Premium I eventually plan on installing 3/4 or full roof rack. In the meantime I am curious about what others with more experience think of picking up a cargo basket to be used with the stock roof rails and what baskets they recommend.

I'm in the same boat.

Bought a used Yakima Loadwarrior. Coupled that with some thule square crossbars also bought used 50". No Wind noise at all surprisingly. Topped it up with a new Load Warrior Cargo net and it works wonders for now. I still use straps to help secure loads.

Small simple starter basket sitting on stock roof crossbars. Walmart $62, don't remember the name. Sturdy U bolts mount it to the bars.

I had the low profile brackets mentioned in the below thread on my 4th gen. They worked great on the 5th gen by flipping them. This made me not need to have the OEM crossbars on thh 5th gen, even though it probably was about same height.

If you're not towing often, perhaps consider a hitch cargo carrier as well?
Cheap, zero MPG penalty, parking spot fender bender insurance at the cost of a slight misery when needing to reach into the trunk.

I've been happy with both the Yakima Loadwarrior w/extension (past 4R) and the Rocky Mounts 14'er (current).

All baskets are similar in design, so for cheaper roof storage it's probably hard to go wrong with any. They all look equally awful, so I only leave it on when I'm actually using it. I generally only use it on extended camping trips to carry fuel cans, a second spare (on a month long Alaska trip), light bulky items like camp chairs, etc. The Yak earned it's keep when we moved cross country.

They should all work with the OEM rails and crossbars.

This is a no-go because primary need for additional gear storage would be for off-road trip and the loss of breakover angle with a hitch mounted basket would be problematic.

I've got the Curt rack plus one extender, which makes it kind of a 3/4. They are pretty cheap on Amazon (less than $150 for rack, extender and a net shipped) but can be prone to rusting since they are steel and have openings that let water in. I've spent an hour or so sealing up the openings with black silicone and changing out the bolts that hold it together to stainless; no rust issues thus far. It works great for hauling extra random crap. On a recent 3,000 mile highway/camping/offroad trip to Utah with the load in the picture up there and AT tires we averaged 17.7 mpg.

I too have the curt with the extender. I also got the cargo bag that fits perfect. I mounted it directly to the crossbars instead of using the hard plastic spacers that make it sit up higher.

Just bought one from Walmart today also, its a "Reese" model. Will definitely come in handy, especially now that kayak season is over.
