CBI folding tire carrier with a slight mod?

Hey guys, in the past i have always struggled to find a place for my spare. I don't have the $$$ to invest in a full swing away bumper and am sick of stuffing the spare in the cargo area or on the roof. I can get a earlier gen CBI folding tire carrier which has everything but the additional receiver the newer ones come with. I know a fabricator who said he could weld on a receiver so i could still use my hitch for towing with the tire carrier on. Cost for everything will be about 200, what are your guys thoughts? thanks!

It also holds your hi lift and i have seen ones where guys have attached an air tank holder

I have a swingdown rear tire carrier. It's pretty much a PITA. There's a reason the swingouts are more popular.

I think it sounds like a winner for $200. In the end, if you're not happy with it, you can probably sell it for about what you paid. :edit: even if a swingdown is somewhat of a PITA, it beats a tire on the roof hands down.

What do you have for a spare? Do you need to run a full size?

I used a 235/85 as a doughnut spare underneath with 285's, and then chopped out the rear factory cross member and installed a high clearance tube cross member, until I got 35's

Keeping it in the rear is still an option in my mind

this would be on a "vehicle to be" but i have typically had 33's on my 4runner although i am planning on going with 32"'s on my next one. I have never had success fitting it underneath with a hidden hitch bolted on.

I am not terribly excited by the design of these but i dont love the tire on roof and the whole idea of it would be to keep the tire/hi lift out of the cargo area as that's my bedroom when camping I also do like the look of it.. it would only be in use when camping and i'd have my little trailer hooked up to it.
