Hey I’m finally finishing my 4runner project and am ready to purchase some tires. I’m looking for some tire recommendations from people because I’m a little confused as to what tire specs I need due to the upgrades I’ve made to the vehicle. So here is some background info.
As you guys already know the OEM 4runner wheels (16”x7”) use 265/70R16 tires (~31”x10”). But I bought a set of FJ80 wheels (16”x8”) from somebody locally and plan on installing 33” tires, so I’m not using the stock 4runner wheels and tires. The FJ80 wheels I purchased already had the original 33” tires on them (285/75R16), but they are dry rotted and not safe to use. However it was great to be able to install them on the 4runner to determine if I liked that tire size before spending all this money on 5 new tires. So I do plan on buying new 285/75R16 tires (33”x11”) for the FJ80 wheels. But if you guys recommend the skinnier 255/85R16 tires (33” x 10”) let me know. I made all the proper suspension and brake upgrades to accommodate the tires size increase. In the front I have JBA high caster upper control arms, Tundra coilovers and Tundra 13WL brakes. In the rear I have Dobinson 210V springs and Bilstein 5160 4runner Gen 4 shocks. I have not done anything about the front wheel well pinch welds yet, but I will handle that when the time comes.
I live in the Northeast and will be using these tires in all conditions (pavement, mud, snow, sand). Mall crawler during the weekdays and off road on the weekends. Backcountry, offroad trails and surf fishing in the spring/summer. Fishing the Great Lakes tributaries and snowboarding in the fall/winter. It’s important to me that the tires have the 3-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) rating.
So here are my questions.
1. What tire brands do you recommend?
Through my own research I’ve narrowed it down to these 3 options. Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac RT, Falken WildPeak A/T4W and BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3. They all have the 3PMSF rating and it appears a lot of Toyota guys already recommend these options. But I’m leaning towards the Falken WildPeaks because of what I’ve read on all the 4runner/Tacoma forums. If you have other recommendations let me know.
Basically from all the comments I’ve read people are saying the Falkan Wildpeaks A/T4W have slightly better wear, traction and are quieter than BFG KO3s. The comments about the Goodyear Wranglers just say they are great, but no reasoning provided; just that they are great and the lightest tire of the 3.
2. What is the deal with the tire load range?
The original 4runner tires (265/70R16) have load range “SL” (standard load, 4 ply). But all the 33” tires (285/75R16) have load range “E” (10 ply). I just don’t know how that will affect everything. I believe I read the load range “E” tires have a stiffer sidewall and will provide a rougher ride, so people compensate for this by airing down their tires for normal use. Is that correct?
The 4runner has a curb weight of 3,820 - 3,845 lb and the FJ80 with stock 285/75R16 tires has a curb weight of 4,510 - 5,313 lb. So after adding metal bumpers, winch, tire carrier, spare tire, skids plates and rock sliders; the 4runner would be around 4,400 lb. So I think the load range “E” will be fine. Can anybody comment on this logic? And maybe let me know what psi they use for their 33” load range “E” tires?
3. Do you guys recommend the skinnier 255/85R16 tires (33” x 10”)?
I’ve read that they don’t need modifying to the front wheel well pinch welds. Not sure of the validity to that statement; or if that even matters to me at all. I feel like with all the additional weight installed on the 4runner, I want a wider footprint on the ground surface for traction; so I will probably stick with the 285/75R16 (33”x11”). But I would like to hear other people’s opinion.
Let me know what you all think. Attached is a photo of my current wheel and tires. And you know I had to add the manual locking hubs.
