CBI IFS eliminator kit

I dont think that's for a 4th gen.

There are numerous examples of 3rd gen solid axle swaps and some 1st and 2nd gen swaps on this site already.

That kit is designed specifically to put an 8" solid axle under an early-IFS truck. You could use it for a 4th gen SAS, but you'd have to modify or build some of your own bits to make it work.

And I dunno if you'd want to use a normal 8" front on a 4th gen anyway. That truck is a good ten inches wider than the pre-86 trucks that axle comes from.

Oh, gotcha. I was really confused as to why nobody had used this. Leaf spring setup is pretty easy in comparison though. Hardest part is the steering. You would think they would have this readily available for the 4th and 5th gens. I was going to do this to my old S-10 Blazer, but then I realized it was a piece of junk. lol

Proven streetability, reliability, and economical compared to links. A properly designed leaf setup is just as capable and comfortable as most link setups, just not as flashy. Leafs work. Plain and simple.

This insanely clean and badass 3rd gen is a perfect example of a properly setup leafed SAS.

I'm confused... are we talking about using these to eliminate the need for the IFS set-up in the front while retaining the IFS drivetrain or for an SAS?

Because you guys are talking 4-links (which if it was SAS in the front makes more sense), but he's asking why more 4th & 5th gen guys don't do this (which makes it sound like he's either saying everyone should do a SAS or that they should swap their coil-overs for leafs...)

Maybe I'm just too tired from all the driving I did today and I'm not reading this thread right...

I'm not sure entirely what you are asking, lol, I'm coming off my 6th day working 12 hour shifts. I'm exhausted also. The Kit the OP references is to install a SAS with leafs onto a post-1985 1st Gen. I would love to see more SAS'd 4th and 5th Gens, no matter if they utilize leafs or links.

and a properly designed and setup 4 link is more capable and comfortable than any leaf setup. Do it right, or don't bother, especially with 4th/5th gens with damn good double wishbone IFS.

Didnt' say it wasnt, and at 2-3x the price and with a much higher probability for issues. I guess you think every shop that has built leafed SAS'd rigs for the past 30 years have been wasting their time. Dont be ignorant.

Not if they were billing for that time :naughty:

It's one thing to replace crap torsion bar IFS with leafs, but to replace upper and lower control arm IFS with leafs, it better live on a trailer.

I respect your opinion, and agree to disagree. Like that leafed 3rd gen i posted a few posts up, i would drive that rig coast to coast without a worry or doubt.

I was talking about SAS. I would love a 3 or 4 link, but not possible right now. I don't have the knowledge of how to make those either, and nobody makes a kit yet. Leaf Springs are easier to set up, can be really great if you do them right, and are much much cheaper!
Not skimping out, just being realistic.

No, nobody makes a 4th gen specific kit yet. RuffStuff makes a universal kit, and if you did your homework and knew what you wanted I bet Dan would help you optimize it for a 4th gen.

Links are cool and you can definitely set up a sweet suspension that way, but I'm with NateMob - leafs are proven, and they don't HAVE to feel like your suspension is made of rocks. A well built spring pack with a carefully chosen high quality shock provides pretty good ride quality. My '85 on Dakar springs and OME Nitrochargers rides great on and off road. I can rally it down dirt roads passing coil-sprung IFS trucks the whole way. It's all in the setup, and a leaf spring setup can definitely be good enough for almost anyone's application. Even on a late model truck.

thats just not true, leafs actually do a few things better than coils

Too much friction, which makes the ride worse over small bumps. Rust makes friction worse. Location control is worse. Less articulation. Increased weight. Axle windup.

No thanks. I'll stick with coils.

This isn't a debate over which is better. I'm thinking budget friendly, and ease of install more than anything. I personally would love a 4 link, but my wallet doesn't like that idea at all. lol
