CBI Moab 1.0 bumper 3rd Gen 4Runner Adaptation *PIC HEAVY THREAD*

So after digging around on the web for months, I could only find two other instances of guys running CBI MOAB1.0 bumpers on the 3rd gen 4Runner, and in both cases they were specially made for the third gen by CBI.

It's quite apparent though that although they were specially made, the base bumper and mounting was similar to the Tacoma bumper and mounting, and therefore, stuck out like a fatlip version of the bumper... Took all the wonderful approach angle this bumper offers, and basically threw it out the window... Plus, it just looked awkward. You can even see where they added an additional angle and material to the rear hook of the bumper to help fill the gap to the fender well...

Knowing this was a potential issue, and that even certain years of the Taco suggest cutting
the frame rail ends back, I went for it and cut the frame rails back as far as I could before
running into mounting welds for the side horns outcropping. Total of 2 7/8". This was
perfect after rewelding in the included frame rail end caps.

Also found out that the side horns on the 4Runner are mounted lower and the fixed nuts
are further apart than the Tacoma side horns... So chopped those off n had my buddy punch
out new side mounting "horns" from 3/16" plate on his cnc table n affix the nuts appropriately.

This basically brought my frame rail ends
in to spec to properly mount the bumper
crossmember and winch plate. All built directly
onto the 4runner itself to ensure fit.

Rest of it I pieced together(fun puzzle)
using internet sourced images and held it
in place while it was tacked then welded up
beautifully by my fabricator.

Got it mounted but with daylight running short,
and hoops/sliders still to go, we called it a night
n picked up the next weekend.

To think it started off looking like this just last October... And progressed to this

I've yet to paint it, but it will be getting hit with black raptor liner at the same time I do
the rest of the truck in tan liner this next month... Still looks amazing and hugs the front of
the fascia MUCH better than even CBI's own attempts at porting this bumper over to the 3rd gen.

The only drawback to this DIY bumper kit adaptation, is you either have to notch the winch plate/crossmember for the lower AC condenser line OR you have to get a V6 Tacoma condenser/drier and lines....

I'm opting for the latter as I don't want to compromise the integrity of my winch plate.

AoR front plate. I ordered my entire build over 2 days. Most of it I had done before and just copied the last 4runner I had, few item's I wanted to do different though (tube vs. plate). Unfortunately, I didn't research much, or really consider some minor attention to detail things that drive me crazy now. I
ll leave it at that as I don't aim to get anyone pissy on your build thread. It looks great, excellent job.

Good job! I've been looking at my bumpers and how to modify them to raise them due to my body lift. The front should be fairly easy, except I just noticed I'll have to modify my center plate (plate the winch hides behind).

Of course it never ends.... I was also wanted to redo my single hoop and make it like yours with three. I like how yours in front of the headlights are (the top piece) horizontal. So many others end up being leaned forward, making that slanted. Never cared for that look.

oh yeah! The whole fascia of the bumper is bolted on with 6 bolts in slotted holes for fit and alignment. It's a little cave in there. LoL. Just unbolt and it looks like this.

That's how I don't understand when others say they have theirs designed sticking way out "cause they needed room for the winch".

Shrockworks holds even closer to the face still and has plenty of room for a 12000!

Never been a fan of too much slant.... But it's grown on me a bit, especially with runners...

But prefer more vertical and matching body lines if possible.

I did this a few months ago and love it. I still need to go back and add my headlight hoops and plate the frame rail ends. Just needed to get it on because my factory bumper was rotting away.

Absolutely nothing. One hole out of the two lines up, so for right now, thats it. I just finished finals so I will have more time now to go back and cut it off and make it right. I just needed my truck back on the road.

Im copying what you did for the side horns. Did you have a problem with the holes straddling the bracket, or is one inside and one out? If I remember correctly, I would have had to move one hole inside the sides of the bracket? Its been a while.

The holes/nuts fit right over the frame end....

He's the basic process:

Cut off the stock frame horns and remount the cross member.

Then sick a 3x5 card in behind the bracket and trace the slotted holes onto it.

Cut the bracket and holes to the right size then slide it into the same spot the card was in.(depending on the thickness of your steel, might need to grind back the mounting surface more)... Thread some nuts and n bolts through the holes lining the bracket up with the crossmember then tac the nuts to the bracket, and the bracket to the frame...

Unbolt the cross member and run finishing welds for the bracket and fixed nuts.
