Changing OCI …. maybe…..

So I want opinions on a thought I had about changing my oil change interval.

When I bought the 4Runner in 2010, I was traveling about 60 miles round trip to work and back. I was using a Castrol GTX conventional oil and a D1 filter and changed every 5k according to the manual.

Fast forward to today and I’ve been using Supertech 10k synthetic with the D1 filter and changing it every 4 months because my commute is only a few miles round trip, and there’s some idling as well.

With that said, would it be harmful if I went 6 months instead of 4 using the synthetic 5w30 and a Toyota D1 filter? I’m accumulating 2-2400 miles every 4 months.

Again I’m interested in peoples thoughts on this.

Thanks

Exactly. If your TBN is still OK and your wear metals are low then you can go further.

Another easy thing to do is to change your oil but leave the filter in place for 2 intervals. A high quality filter has a lot of service in it and actually filters better the longer it’s in service.

Whatever you do, don't do this to your Toyota or any other brand...

While I respect oil analysis, it doesn't tell the whole story, not even close.

The attached vid is Long, detailed yet shows in complete detail what happens when someone continuously does long 10K OCIs.

After watching this, I'm Lowering mine to 4K OCIs except for my turbo machines, those are dialed in at 3K.

Luck all.

I put less than 5k a year on my 3rd gen. I change the oil every 6 months, or if it has sat without running for more than 2 months.

Recommended interval is at LEAST once a year, so you are good to go 6 months, especially if running synthetic. I strictly run Synthetic Blend since it's just a bit cheaper and honestly works just fine for these old engines.

I’ve typically always done every 5K, but there have been instances where I did every 2,500 miles, every 3K or 4K miles. I’ve only ever exceeded 5K once and it was like 5,600 ish miles? But I’m gonna try to do a few 2,500 mile OCI’s coming up since I recently switched brands of oil.

I definitely like the Blackstone analysis reports but will agree with the above that it doesn’t tell the full story. Some claim every 5K is a waste, some say otherwise. Blah, blah, blah. Do whatever makes you happy, honestly, at least that’s what I do. It doesn’t bother me to do it before 5K and I don’t feel like I’m “wasting my money” either. My 01 is an investment and with 316K miles on it, I intend to protect my investment by any means necessary.

But to answer your question, I don’t think it would hurt it. I think you should be alright. You can do a UOA just to see what they say. Blackstone told me I could try going 6,500 miles but I would never. That’s just me though.

I’m also running the SuperTech full synthetic high mileage 5W-30. There’s a LOT of good info about it that proves it’s a great motor oil.

I was only think of going to 6months instead of 4 as I have been doing.

Ahh, it warms my heart to see so many people switching to full synthetic!

I would follow the oil manufacturer's maximum oil change guidelines. I tried looking it up really quick but couldn't find it but it might just be printed on the bottle. In an effort to cut down on maintenance I opted for a 10,000 mile 1 year full synthetic for our hybrid sedan and a 15,000 1 year full synthetic on my 4Runner. I do only one oil change per year as the oil manufacturer recommended to replace only once every 12 months.

Since I don't know if Supertech recommends a 4 month or 6 change interval, here's a few things to consider:

  • If this is the first time using full synthetic, the varnish that has built up over the years from conventional oil will break down and suspend in the oil. This will cause the oil to turn dark pretty quickly, sometimes after just a few thousand miles. My JDM engine is still doing this after 4 years.
  • Short trips can trap water vapor in the oil and crankcase if it cannot get hot enough to boil off. An occasional long, hot trip will mitigate this but gas prices make long drives a lot less economical than before.
  • The PCV valve plays a part in oil longevity as if the valve is clogged, water and oil vapors cannot evacuate and burn off as efficiently and will degrade the oil.
  • The longer the oil change interval the better the filter that is needed. I think you also posted about oil filters so there's plenty of great information there. Short of it is be sure to match exceed the filter life to the oil (10K filter replaced after 5K is fine, 5K filter pushed to 10K is not).

The fact that you are thinking about oil and trying to get the most of your engine puts you way ahead of most. The great news is that our 4Runners are really easy on oil - they rarely burn any oil (ain't no Honda) and can run dangerously low on oil and still perform well.

I've settled on 6 month OCI.
At 6 months, my mileage can be anywhere from 2800 miles to 7000.
If the mileage driven is low, that was most likely all short trip, around-town type driving...the worst for the oil.
If the mileage is 7000 (which happened one time), that means I've done a lot of long trip driving, which is relatively easy on the oil.
I will sometimes extend the 6 months by a few weeks or maybe a month if the mileage accumulated is very low, like under 3000.
Using the Y1 filter and Group 3 oil. (Group 3 is the oil that is legally allowed to write "Full Synthetic" on the bottle, but is not actually synthetic.)
I'd use synthetic blend for the slightly lower cost, but I've never seen it in my preferred 5W-40 weight spec.

The car nut says 6 months oil changes. I personally use 5k oil changes with full synthetic oil. That's just me.

I could be wrong but blended oil is never says the ratios and it's not 50/50. Could be 90 /10 with conventional being 90% ..
