Cheap cargo area mod

Was looking at getting a mat for the cargo area, but also wanted to be able to sleep with the seats down. Most of the mats I was looking at did not meet my goals.

I decided to pick up a stall mat and cut it to size, so I went to the local tractor supply to pick one up. Right next to the stall mats was a stack of 4ft X 3ft utility mats. For $25 I got a 3/4" thick mat. Cut it with a razor knife.

Perfect! Will post a picture tomorrow.

Let me know in a week about the odor... My MIL got one for her kitchen to stand on while doing dishes (long story) and the house smells like a tire store.

I keep a pair of Diamond Soft 4 x 3 mats in the cargo area more to protect the carpet. They are easy to clean. Yes I need to clean them now. I have the second one for when I put the seats down. they have no smell and have been in there for a year. Since I don't drive my 4Runner daily it still smells like new.

When I am sleeping in the back of the 4Runner I use a Coleman twin air mattress. It only takes a minute to blow up and two minutes to deflate and is way more comfortable to sleep on than any mat.

I put one of the tractor supply mats in my 3rd gen, no problems with smell. Then again, I love the smell of a tire shop.

Need to get another and cut to fit the bed/cargo area. For ~$20 it's hard to beat.

I figure if there is a smell, I can do two things:

1) air it out in the yard for a few days
2) paint both sides with plastidip and seal in any out gases.

I'm not there yet - wife says she doesn't smell it in the T4R, so I think I'm good to go.

When I got my 4runner my cargo mat was already trashed so I just left it in the back and don't care about it.
