Cheapest insurance for a 4Runner?

Just picked up a 2012 Toyota 4Runner from a friend

It's now sitting in my garage since I don't have insurance coverage for it yet

I know skimping out on insurance coverage is never a good idea, but hypothetically speaking, if I wanted the absolute lowest price on insurance for this thing, where should I go?

I'm a single male (early 30s) living near Boston, MA.

I hope to get the minimum coverage (obviously), but not much more than that.

What do you guys recommend?

Calling some insurance companies and getting a quote? lol

If you have homeowner's or rental insurance you may be able to get discounted auto insurance from the same company.

thanks. unfortunately i have neither. just have health insurance thru my employer. unfortunately, you can't really combine that.

I've been going around getting quotes for the past hour or so.

The cheapest I found is from Compare Auto Insurance Quotes - 4AutoInsuranceQuote.com (401) 580-7272 at $75/month. The only problem is that the company seems... ummm sketchy.

The cheapest from the big, reliable guys is Amica Mutual Insurance Company ... they got me at $83 a month. Not too bad.

GEICO is actually kind of expensive (or at least their quote is), so I might have to steer clear of them this time.

So far, however, Amica is the winner.

Amica is routinely ranked as one of the best Insurance companies out there (USAA as well). Considering their quote was only $8 more per month than the sketchy one, that sounds like a pretty good deal.

Too many variables to list. Rates vary widely based on location, multiple policies, location, etc., etc., etc.

I've been with State Farm for about 12 years now. I do call around to other Ins. Co's every time I receive a renewal statement. Overall, no other company has come close to matching the cost of the coverage I currently have.

I use Progressive for my 4Runner. I have full coverage, road side, glass, medical. I pay 73 a month but mine is a 1999.

So you just bought a 2012 4runner...so like a 30 thousand dollar investment. And you want minimum coverage.

I know im young but that just seems stupid to me. Your gambling $30 thousand every time it leaves your house, amd sometimes not even then. Like in my case when a drunk driver hit mine amd took off. That went on my insurance, and with minimum I would have nothing but a totaled 4runner.

Ive been in both situations, I had minimum coverage on my first car. Totaled it and walked away with nothing but the 450 I got for it for scrap.

Anways. Ive got progressive and they seem great to work with and have decnt prices, j have full coverage on my 96 and a 20 year old man, 500 collison and 200 comp deductibles and its only $117 a month.

Also idk if you have it in your area but In pa we have Erie insurance company...my brother has it and theyre awesome. Hes 26 and has some tickets and full coverage on his 2011 xterra is only like 124 a month,

Amica, Geico and AllState gave me competitive quotes last time. Farmers Group, Statefarm and Progressive were quite a bit more. Unfortunately due to my proximity to the ocean, none of those companies would insure my home. So no combined policy discounts for me.

Absolutely go with the minimum coverage you can find to be legal. Take the difference between that amount and the amount that you think is reasonable for full coverage, and put it in an investment account that allows emergency withdrawals. Do that with every other insurance you might feel inclined to carry - go with the bare minimum, or none at all if it's not legally/contractually required, and put the money you would be wasting on insurance into a savings account.

Do that until you've got 50k or 75k or however much makes you feel safe, then let it sit there and enjoy never contributing to the evil insurance industry ever again.

Insurance is a scam, people. Buying more insurance than is absolutely necessary is just throwing your money away.

Be careful of this! "wasting money" as a blanket statement is not correct. I don't disagree with the basic premise, and yes the insurance industry is a step removed from racketeering in general but good coverage from a reputable company can save your a$$. Not being smart about your insurance needs is throwing your money away. No , I'm not an ins. salesman.

If you rent, get renters insurance. It's cheap and basically stupid not to. Ask anyone who has had a fire (ask me how I know...). Think you won't have a fire because you're careful, etc... What about the idiot neighbors, or a lightning strike? Same goes for homeowners ins. A friend from work had her apt. burn up thanks to someone violating the ordinance prohibiting grills on apt. decks. She lost everything. We went out on our shift to do some overhaul (it was in our response territory) at that address. She was there meeting her insurance guy. He cut her a $1200 check on the spot to help with getting a new home, etc.

As for auto insurance, what if someone breaks into your car and steals everything inside and you had something important or valuable in there? Comprehensive covers that. What if you have an accident and someone goes to the hospital? Your full coverage insurance covers that too. How about if you cause an accident? Full coverage covers if someone you hit goes to the hospital. I think there is some coverage for legal action if you caused an accident but that depends on policy, carrier, etc. (50 or 75K is nowhere near enough to protect you)

I can sympathize with not being able to afford a lot of coverage. If it's just you by yourself then you could probably do fine that way. If you have a family, a house, etc. then being cheap can cost big time later on. How much do you like to gamble??

Just shop around. I pay 45 a month for full coverage, but I have USAA. If you are a vet (and honorably discharged) you could become a member and get their insurance (they are second to none in all aspects of their company as far as I'm concerned). Or you could join the military and then become a member that way... :)

try

a insurer that calculates the rate by the number of miles you drive each year for a start. but all in all it depends on your driving record and if the truck is financed the bank will require full coverage..

There are plenty of factors that go into what your insurance is. One not so obvious item is what is that vehicle replacing...
I have a 2005 pickup truck. I still keep full insurance on it because it's not that much more than the required coverage.

I bought a 2014 LE new and traded in a 16 year old pickup to get her home. I pay less for full coverage on my Limited than I do for my now 12 year old truck. My insurance company told me that what the vehicle is replacing has something to do with the rates.
I have a nationally known company that some people may say is not the lowest price but in my opinion for my runner it's a sweet deal. I pay less than 400 for six months full coverage.

Try Elephant. I have had them for 3 years now. Their rates are very competitive. They are fast on settling claims. Two of my teenage drivers totaled their cars and it was a painless process.

Not State Farm $83 a month for fairy basic coverage on a 1999 model. I have not had a ticket in 14 years and my wife has never had a ticket. we also pay the same for the same coverage on My wife's Expedition that is 11 years newer and half the mileage so I don't get it.

I've had Farmers for many years. It's not the cheapest and is probably similar to the other big companies but they took care of me in an odd situation.

I was sued for major damages and injuries for an accident I was never in. Person at fault had the same full name as me. Took about two years to resolve and required dispositions and attorneys in two states. The only thing that kept me out of court is that the real person was located. Farmers hung in there the whole way.

Wow dude... that's terrible advise.

I'm guessing none of you have ever been in a legal situation... some of you guys with minimum coverage are brave. The right answer is buy the right insurance products to protect your assets.

My cousin who got into an accident with a motorcycle was getting sued for 1.5 million dollars... I'm pretty sure if he had what the OP is looking for he would have been living on the street right now in just legal feels alone.

He was insured correctly for his personal needs... His policy covered him all while having the insurance companies lawyers handle the entire situation. It was a serious claim with real injuries...

You can't plan to avoid things like that... that's why we have insurance... for when shit actually hits the fan.
