Check engine light never comes on

If it's just the bulb, easy fix. But you give us no other information besides that it's not working. Here's a thread that shows you how to replace the bulb.

Is there an easy way to identify which bulb it is that the check engine light relies on?

It's the one that plugs into the the check engine light slot in the back of the gauge cluster. Once you pull out the cluster it will be obvious.
