I got the code today for a shift solenoid. Is this a part that goes bad frequently? I'm just wondering if it's worth buying new or if it's something I can replace with a junkyard part if they yard will part with it.

Doubt a junkyard would render a transmission useless for just a solenoid. Just buy new. See the other thread discussing this very topic currently ongoing.

In the case that they have a 4Runner with a shot tranny for whatever reason, would anyone buy a junkyard solenoid?

Risky. They are kinda expensive from the dealer, but I think it's worth it.
