check engine light when out.

I bought this 4runner back is August of last year while I was driving it home the check engine light came on. Call the dealer the next week and told him what happen. His said what you want me to do about it. You bought the car as is. It was my problem to fix it. While i was piss about it, but i always send the papers and payed him rhe money. it was in my name. So i justed dealt with it. Put the code reader on it and it said it was some kind of vacuum leak forgot number it was. Drove it around for couple months then I took it to the Toyota dealership. Got it back that same day drove around for about 2 weeks then the light came back on again. Took it back to the dealership and they said I'm going to need a new gas tank and some fuel lines. All in all it cost $1,800 drove it for about 2 days and check engine light came back on again. By this time I was getting pissed spend about $2,500 and still the light is on. So I decided to do this myself, bought me a fuel filter a while back which I was going to change. I was on YouTube the other day watching a video about changing fuel filter where you have to unplug the fuel pump to take pressure off the lines so you can remove them. The lines look kind of rusty and I dont having any flare nut wrench. So when I went to remove them it felt like it kind of slippingand kinda round off so i stop sprayed some nut Buster on them and start to put everything back together again. Plup my fuel pump, connect my battery
and started my car. Lo and behold the light went out. Drove it a little yesterday and drove about 50 miles today and still no check engine light. Dont know what happen but i thik its fixes. Did any of you have a problem like this?
SORRY for the long post but had to get it off by chest cant believe it was that simple. Everytime I put gas in my car it came on I'm going to try that tomorrow (crossing fingers).

Have you tried a Bluetooth obd2 coffee reader? They sell for $20 on Amazon and can tell you the codes in minutes with a free code reader app on Google play or iTunes store.

Post the codes here so we can see them. Codes are really the only sane way way to start to figure out what it is.

Sorry to hear about your dealership experience. Sucks. Maybe try an independent shop? Not sure what city you are in but there are regional sections on this website (eg SoCal) and you can post there asking for shop recommendations.

Your check engine light is off because when you disconnected the battery you reset the ECU. I doubt a fuel filter solved whatever problem you have. Like mentioned above, when it comes back on buy a ODBII reader and post the code(s).

one of the obdII blutooth readers is a great thing. 25 bucks on Amazon. and with computers it can be that simple. probably not but it can. if it is causing no other problems have a little patience. and find a mechanic that is not a dealer.

Did the dealer say why he thought you needed a new tank?

If the dealer never replaced your gas cap it's a good cheep part to replace as your first step in getting rid of EVAP codes.

Was just going to change the fuel filter wasn't expecting the light to go off. I'm at about 85 miles now and still not on hope it doesn't come back.. lol thanks.

I think they change the gas cap the first time. When I took it in for a second time. I know they put a new gas tank, gas cap, and sending unit( I think that is what you call it) it was all rusted out they where afraid they going to break it. Thanks..

Wel just like you said it came back on. Decided to take 4Runner to work instead of the car at while driving to work it came on. Got work put the code reader on it and 5 code show up P0440,P0441, and P0446. EVAP emission control system. I win we on here and it has to do with the gas cap and a charcoal canister. The gas cap I got doesn't look new or old. I'm going to buy one a try it.

Do you top off your fuel tank by any chance? If you do that, fuel gets into places it's not supposed to and clogs up the entire EVAP system.

Maybe once or twice. Just to get a round number. The light came on while i was driving it home from the car lot. Had the car about 6 months.

From my little bit of experience with evap codes for 01-02 4runners, the overfill check valve gasket on top of the gas tank seems to be the more likely culprit.

Halfway down this evap thread there's steps from the FSM on testing the charcoal canister.

When I took it to the Toyota dealer and they changed the tank. They changed the check valve gasket and the fuel suction gasket to.

Were you getting the work done because of the codes or because you were replacing a damaged tank? If it was for the codes, take it back & tell them the codes are still there. If you were replacing a damaged tank & didn't have the codes prior to the work, take it back and let them know that the codes popped up after getting the work done.

Both. Took it there the first time got it back the codes came back. Took it back then they showed me were all the fuel lines rusted and there was a vent tube rusted off the tank so they changed it. Got it back codes came back agian so i said screw it, ill find it myself
