what are some reasons why the check engine light might go on? i jus came from a trip and when on my way back home i noticed that it was on... could it be the way i drove? im plannin to take it to the shop sometime soon but i jus wanna know what it could be

Could be bad O2 sensor, could be loose gas cap, could be MAF. Anything can cause this light to come on. Usually, the check engine light is related to something regarding the emissions of the vehicle. Definitely, go get it checked out.

Yes, they say that too can cause the light to come on. But I always pump like $5 more than when it stops.

i know its bad to top off your tank... so no i do not over fill.. i probably press on the pump 2 or 3 more times after the pump stops on its on and thats all

Just go to Autozone or the such and they will pull the code for free and tell you what it is.

Plugs may be mis-firing, you may need a tune-up.

Yes, they say that too can cause the light to come on. But I always pump like $5 more than when it stops.

10 years ago $5 would have been alot but today that's only a gallon and a half but it could still cause the problem. I add about a half gallon after the "click".

If the gas cap is not tightened to the point where it clicks, it can cause the Check Engine light to come on. I've had this happen on both of our Yota's. Give it a good tighten & pull the battery cable for about 60 seconds. You might save yourself a trip to the repair shop.

luckly i have a co-worker that helped me out with it.... we found the code.... i forgot exactly what it was but it said something like.... "system too lean" and its probably because of the heat and that i was at a higher elevation since i was up near the mountains.... plus i was kinda driving hard going up hill when driving on the way back home... nothing big....

hello,

i have a 2000 4runner sr5 highlander with approx. 54k.

a few weeks ago the CEL came on and i brought it into a local shop.

they pulled the codes and said they didn't have any info on them - PO1130 and PO1135 - there was no additional info from the code puller thingy - lol.

they cleared the CEL but it came on within 10 minutes.

i then bought a new gas cap, disconnected the battery for approx. 30 minutes and the CEL was off.

i drove approx. 10 miles on city streets and no problems.

... parked, had dinner and started the engine - CEL!!!!

brought it back to the shop and they recommended that i go to a toyota dealership.

i called and spoke to a toyota service rep and he suspects an O2 sensor... he wasn't able to pull info on the code either - odd.

anyway, i'm into the dealership tomorrow.

I beleive those aer the same codes I had several months ago which says bank to lean or something. After using the search feature here and reading up on things i determined it was pretty much the MAF which needed to be cleaned. A shop here pulled all the codes and cleaned it for 20 dollars for me and reset it in the computer versus just disconnecting the Battery. No Problems since then and that been a while ago.

I had the same problem with my 99 limited. Check engine light came on on the way home from Canyonlands and the code read "system too lean". The guy at NAPA said it may be due to the 85 octane im using in CO. Im gunna start using 87 and up and see if it goes out.
